A House-Boat on the Styx is a book written by John Kendrick Bangs and published in 1895.The premise of the book is that everyone who has ever died (up to the time in which the book is set, which seems to be about the time of its publication) has gone to Styx, the river that circles the underworld. The book begins with Charon, ferryman of the Styx being startled-and annoyed-by the arrival of a houseboat on the Styx. At first afraid that the boat will put him out of business, he later finds out that he is actually to be appointed the boat's janitor. What follows are eleven more stories (for a total of twelve) which are set on the house boat. There is no central theme, and the purpose of the book appears to be as a literary thought experiment to see what would happen if various famous dead people were put in the same room with each other. Each chapter is a short story featuring various souls from history and mythology. In the twelfth chapter the house boat disappears, leading into the sequel, Pursuit of the House-Boat.

The Pursuit of the House-Boat is an 1897 novel by John Kendrick Bangs, and the second one to feature his Associated Shades take on the afterlife. The original full title was The Pursuit of the House-Boat: Being Some Further Account of the Divers Doings of the Associated Shades, Under the Leadership of Sherlock Holmes, Esq. and it has also been titled In Pursuit of the House-Boat and Pursuit of the House-Boat. There are 12 chapters in the book. They were first published as a serial, under the full-title and including the Newell illustrations, in Harper's Weekly from February 6 to April 24, 1897. After the House-Boat was hijacked by Captain Kidd at the end of A House-Boat on the Styx, the various members of its club decided that in order to track it down, a detective would have to be called in. So they hired Sherlock Holmes, who, at the time of the book's publication, had indeed been declared dead by his creator...

A darkness is settling over a terrorized community, brought on by a genius fiend who hides clues to his horrific acts in complex riddles and brilliant wordplay. John Kendrick Bangs published his book A House-Boat on the Styx in 1895. In it, Charon, the main character, learns that he has been selected to serve as the Styx, the river that circles the underworld, cleaner. The advent of a houseboat on the River Styx startles and irritates Charon at the start of the novel. The next eleven stories (for a total of twelve) are all set on the house boat. There is no central theme, and the reason the book has all the earmarks of being a scholarly psychological study. Each chapter is a brief story about a different soul from mythology and history. The Pursuit of the House-Boat, the sequel, begins when the house boat vanishes. There don't seem to be any original fictitious characters in A House-Boat on the Styx. All have been borrowed, in varying degrees, from mythology or history.Throughout the book, there is a running joke that claims Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Walter Raleigh, and others ghostwrote Shakespeare's plays instead of him.

After hunting gold in the Northwest and the Klondike he rode deep into the savage territory of Africa to slay the M’Limo, treacherous Matabele high priest.
