Excerpt from The Honey Bee The honey bee may well be counted as a friend of the human race, since besides furnishing large quantities of the most health ful sweet known, the commercial importance of which at this day is by no means insignificant, it is also of great value as a fertil izing agent to many of the crops produced by the farmer and horticulturist, obtaining results which could not otherwise be secured. Beekeeping on a commercial scale is far from being a royal road to wealth as pictured by some, but requires as much labor, diligence and attention to details as many other lines of business. However, the thorough going apiarist, well adapted and educated to the business, given a good location and a favorable season, usually has no complaint to offer. As along other agricultural lines, weather conditions often exert an adverse in uence and poor seasons intervene, which necessitate extra care, fortitude and enthusiasm on the part of the beekeeper, to safely bridge them over. Excerpt from The Life of the Bee Certainty be known of the curious, pro found, and intimate side of its inhabi tants. Nor will this be at the cost of what still remains to be learned. I shall pass over in silence the hoary traditions that, in the country and many a book, still constitute the legend of the hive. Whenever there be doubt, disagreement, hypothesis, when I arrive at the unknown, I shall declare it loyally; you will find that we often shall halt before the un known. Beyond the appreciable facts Of their life we know but little of the bees. And the closer our acquaintance becomes, the nearer is our ignorance brought to us of the depths of their real existence; but such ignorance is better than the other kind, which is uacon scious, and satisfied. Excerpt from The Book of the Honey Bee Beekeeping is also a centre, a starting point, from which many delightful roads radiate; and creates a stimulus for increased knowledge, not only of the habits and life history of the little creatures who so delightfully minister both to our pleasure and profit, but also of the truly marvellous part they (with other allied insects) play in the economy of nature. Probably no other pursuit is calculated to bring one into intimate touch with nature at so many points as is beekeeping. To the gardener, the fruit-grower especially, bees are an absolute necessity.
