Excerpt from The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paedology, Vol. 12: January, 1890 In groping about in my mind for a text upon which to build this paper, there was ever present with me the feeling that this society was entitled to my best and what better could I offer it than the plain tale of my own commonplace experience. It is of this, therefore, that I would speak; of midwifery services rendered mainly to the humble, the dis tressed, the blighted services hardly worth recounting for their own sake; but that which has cost me ten thousand hours of anxiety may furnish one hour's interest to you. Excerpt from The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paedology, Vol. 9: January, 1887 Thirty-eight years ago last spring my friend the late Doctor Thomas Daugherty, and late Professor of Physiol ogy in the Baltimore Medical College, remarked to me in conversation a few months after our graduation, When we have had ten years practical experience, we will care but very little for medical authorities. Long before the ten years had expired I had learned to think and act for myself in regard to rupturing the mem branes. Many a time have I notched the nail of my index finger to convert it into a saw, to cut through the tense and tough membranes that would neither yield to the pressure of the water nor to the pressure of the head. Excerpt from The Homeopathic Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pedology, 1895, Vol. 17 In this connection it is interesting to note that it is but recently that these influences have been recognized by the authors of some of our best text-books on obstetrics. In Tarnier's edition of Cazeaux of 1884, we find the statement that nothing can be more obscure than the causes of extra uterine pregnancy, although it is intimated that paralysis and other diseases of the tube may conduce to it. Surprise during coitus, fear of surprise, or the fear of the result were usually mentioned as reasons for the failure of the ovum to continue in its course through the tube until it reached its normal site for development in the cavity of the uterus. It is only within the past few years that the profession has attained to a full appreciation of the influence excited by diseases affecting the integrity of the tube itself. Some authors advanced the theory that the ovum fell into the open mouths of some distended uterine veins, which of course do not empty into the fallopian tubes. Others assigned as a cause the migration of the fertilized ovum into the canal of Gartner, a channel whose very exist ence is doubted by most authorities of the present day, except as it may be found in some of the lower animals perhaps.
