LESSON OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program, the home health aide will be able to: Explain the differences between influenza and the common cold Describe how influenza is spread, and List three ways to protect patients from the flu virus OVERVIEW The influenza virus, also known as the flu, killed 36,000 Americans in 2003. Of the 36,000, more than 32,000 were 65 or older, despite 2003 having the highest immunization rate of any year on record. Over 83 million were immunized in 2003, and yet only 60 percent of those were senior citizens. The flu and pneumonia (the most common flu complication) combined are the fifth leading cause of death among Americans age 65 and older. The best and most effective way to protect elderly patients from the flu begins with health care workers. Aides and other health care workers must be vaccinated against the flu to help ensure they do not get the virus and transmit it to their patients and co-workers. This in-service provides an in-depth look at the flu and how to protect patients during flu season. Knowing all there is to know about the flu helps aides provide the best care for their patients.
