Excerpt from Home and School Sewing In order that the best method of instructing the children in classes might be secured, experiments were made and reported upon, the teachers being encouraged to express their difficulties and tell their successes; thus placing the experience of the entire force at the disposal of each individual. The lessons in this book are mainly the outgrowth of the practical suggestions mentioned above, tested and worked out many times by the author in the schools under her charge, together with the careful study of books on the sub j ects treated. Excerpt from School Sewing: Based on Home Problems Those who are, familiar with the subject of sewing are well aware that it does present many scientific phases, and that there are correct and incorrect ways of doing things which belong to this important art. These established principles are but the outgrowth and develop ment which the age now holds as its heritage from the careful and thoughtful efforts of generations gone by. Surely each girl should not be called upon to relive all these experiences in the sewing class, and to develop herself from the crudest undertakings of sewing through all of the primitive steps which have made possible our modern needlework. Neither, on the other hand, should the child be compelled to master in an absolute way a definite and prescribed set of disassociated needlework principles. The experiences of the child, her own environment, and outlook into her future occupation, as well as her immediate needs should be studiously considered in prescribing her work. The course should be sufficiently flexible to adapt itself to these various needs without in any way disregarding the established principles of the subject. The apperceptive powers of the girl constitute her only means of interpreting her surroundings. With this idea in mind, this text has been designed to deal with logical principles in a psychological way. Paradoxical as this may seem at first, an examination of the text reveals the fact that every lesson presents ample opportunity for the student to acquaint herself with different principles, and at the same time employ those principles in the making of a project which will appeal to her native interest. In order to provide for the development of initiative and to stimulate the exercise of individual tastes, untold possibilities lie Open in the matter of original design, choice in decoration, and in the employ ment of the artistic touches which are in no way a violation of principles. Excerpt from Sewing and d104iles: First Lessons for Elementary Schools This volume is intended for use in places beginning the study of sewing and textiles. It has been arranged for use in the elementary schools and does not presuppose any training in general science. It is strictly an elementary treatment of the subject. The book deals with the selection of clothing and garment-making. Garments are made, the com mercial patterns being used. The lessons in tex tiles are correlated with the lessons in garment making by studying, in the class, the materials that are being used in the laboratory. The hygiene of clothing, and the clothing budget, are discussed when the dress is the laboratory problem. Through the Home Problems, the home and school work may be correlated. Attention is called to the insertion of material for the use of the modern project method. Many teachers will' find that this makes the plan of the book more attractive and practicable._ It need not dis turb the work of the teacher who prefers the longer established ways of teaching. The author acknowledges the help given in illustrating the book by the United States Depart ment of Agriculture, The United States Bureau of Standards, Cheney Brothers, The Linen Thread Company, and Landers, Frary and Clark. The author also gratefully acknowledges the criticisms and suggestions of educators who kindly read the manuscript. Excerpt from Hand Sewing Lessons: A Graded Course for Schools and for the Home It was found that while all learned to make garments for home use, few became expert needlewomen. Haste to complete wearing apparel resulted in inferior workmanship. A combination course was adopted which gives variety with continuity. It has been used for several years with excellent results. _pupils are taught that only by careful practice can they hope to excel, that these models are the way marks of their progress, and will be treasured by them in the future as their own handiwork. With the text, they form a book of reference on making and mending garments that is highly prized. Hand Sewing Lessons is a book for those who wish to learn sewing and how to teach it to others. It gives a practical course for normal and high school classes and supplies trained teachers with printed instructions for pupils in place of written ones that take so much time and that over lap the work of other departments. The stitches are combined for practice while new ones are being learned, so as to form a continuous line of progress and carry out the principle of bridging the way from the known to the unknown, and of making a pleasant road to knowledge, which will become a part of daily life in after years. Excerpt from Home and School Sewing Seventeen years ago sewing was introduced into the Philadelphia Public Schools. During these years Miss Kirby, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, has conducted monthly meetings of the teachers of sewing, in which were freely discussed methods of making and teaching the various seams, and all matters pertaining to the subject. In order that the best method of instructing the children in classes might be secured, experiments were made and reported upon, the teachers being encouraged to express their difficulties and tell their successes; thus placing the experience of the entire force at the disposal of each individual. The lessons in this book are mainly the outgrowth of the practical suggestions mentioned above, tested and worked out many times by the author in the schools under her charge, together with the careful study of books on the subjects treated. Special acknowledgment is due to Miss Helen Fairchild Kinsey for the assistance she has given in illustrating the book.
