Excerpt from Hockey as a Game for Women IT is, fortunately, no longer necessary to speak apolo getically of the girl who is fond of outdoor games. She is now a recognized personality of the twentieth century and this being so, we may perhaps admit that time has done a good deal towards smoothing down some of her rough edges - for the athletic woman of twenty years ago was really rather a terrible person. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... opposing one--and, speaking generally, her object should be to get the ball away from the latter and to send it to the former. Any further attention she has to spare should be devoted to the opposing insideforward and wing-half. When near her own circle she should mark the outside-forward very closely, leaving the back to take care of the inner, and should so place herself that she can intercept any passes into the middle. The right-half should take up a position between the right wing and right inner forwards, about ro yards behind them, and the left-half should stand about on the 5 yards line and the same distance behind her wing-forward, keeping further out than the righthalf, as all the players on the left must do, in order to get as much of the game as possible on her right side. Both the wing-halves should be on the look-out for a 'roll-in, ' as this should always be done as smartly as possible. As a rule, the wing-forward rolls in the ball sent out by one of the other side, and the innerforward and half should come close up to the sideline to receive it, the half-back close behind the forward. There is generally some understanding between the three, and the half will know by the look of the wing-forward whether the ball will be sent to her or to the inner. The usual tactics for her to pursue, if she gets the ball, are to hit it back to the sender if the game is anywhere near their own goal, or to try and centre it if they are in the enemy's territory. If the 'roll in' is to be of any advantage to the side, it must be taken promptly, and before the other side have time to gather round. The half may roll the ball in herself either to the back or centre-half if the forwards are too far up the field to get back quickly. This manoeuvre, .

Excerpt from Learning to Play Field Hockey Field Hockey is played in Great Britain by both men and women, but not in mixed teams, nor in mixed competition. In the United States its activities are confined principally to girls' colleges and schools. Nearly all of the American women's institutions of learning devote much time to the game. Interest in it is spreading to the high schools, when the latter have a sufficient playing area, either on the school ground or in parks. In Philadelphia, for instance, there is an organized league of clubs whose members learned field hockey at college and who keep up their interest in the game much as do the women of Great Britain in; county and similar teams. In the milder climate of the British Isles it is possi ble to play hockey from autumn until early summer. In the United States the playing period is confined principally to autumn, although it would be quite easy to hold a supplementary season in spring time. The Ladies' Field of London, a weekly periodical, den votes much space to Field Hockey in addition to the great variety of other subjects that specially interest women. It published recently a series of articles on learning to play field hockey, by Mr. Eustace E. White, sports editor. So thoroughly did these treat of the game that the publishers of Spalding's Athletic Library made arrangements with the author and Ladies' Field to reproduce them in book form for the benefit of field hockey players in the United States. Excerpt from The Game of Ring Hockey Voorhees of Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, in 1899. The possibility was first suggested by a rubber tire that had been separated from an iron dumb - hell which had been left in the gymnasium. The pratt'institute High School class of then freshmen, saw the ring and, having wands in their hands preparatory to falling in for drill, began to pass said ring about the floor; The game was played in a desultory manner until, 1902, when Dr. Voorhees figured out a ring with an inner bevel and a stick with a convex playing end, to correspond with the bevel in the ring, so as to limit the possibility of lifting the ring. Inter-class tournaments were arranged and played, creating very much interest and enthusiasm. One must be quick of eye to follow the ring, and quick and accurate of motion to place the end of the stick in the three inch opening of the ring as it is speeding across the floor. The possibility for the exercise of judgment and the chance for team work are unlimited. When the game can be played in a room, say forty by sixty feet, or of approximate proportions, and the side walls are used for boundaries a great deal is added to the game by the possibility of carom shots; goals being made by the ring having been shot against the wall at an angle that the rebound would carry it between the goal posts. Caroms may also be made from the side of the foot placed solidly on the floor in the line of direction of the ring. A room of this kind is also conducive'to a continuous game because there is no out of bounds. When playing in such a room the goal posts must be placed at least four feet from the end walls and the backward feet connected by a white line to be the goal line. Further more, from the different work required on different parts of the field, it is adapted to all types of players, increasing in them all mental alertness, vigor and endurance, those necessary factors in a successful life. Though the love of hockey has been growing so rapidly in England, and each season shows a tremendous increase in the number of matches (when traveling in the autumn in England, one is always encountering eleven ladies with their sticks, off to their county or town match, and, if the women's colleges and schools are going down, instead Of the Old stampede of bi cycles at the stations is seen a forest of hockey sticks), this last season has seen still greater advances, among them the forma tion of a women's Scotch eleven to contest for national honors with the all England, Irish and Welsh elevens. Also many leading sportswomen forming their own private elevens for con test. Which fashion promises to come greatly into vogue. French clubs have begun to challenge the English clubs, and hockey is rapidly being taken up abroad. This year Germany and Belgium have started ladies' and mixed clubs, Berlin's Anglo - American being amongst the notable. The fever has even been carried to Uganda!
