Excerpt from History of West Virginia, Vol. 1 of 2: In Two Parts IN the study of the history of a commonwealth it is necessary that we understand something of the causes which have acted in producing and advancing, or re tarding and destroying, the various institutions, civil and otherwise, of that particular commonwealth. Then, that we may intelligently study the history Of West Virginia The Little Mountain State, the Daughter of the Old Dominion, born amid the throes of civil war - it is important that we study the causes which led to its settlement and organization as a State. Excerpt from History of West Virginia, Vol. 1 of 2: In Two Parts In thus presenting to the public the present volume the author disclaims any merit for it except that of accuracy. All he dares to assert is that he has brought to the task of its preparation an enthusiastic admiration for his subject - an admiration for the men who first dared the perils of the western wilds, and crossing the Rocky Barrier, reared their cabin homes amid the hills and vales of the solitudes of what is now West Virginia - an admiration for these same men who, during the American Revolution, warred alike against the savage from the wilderness and the Briton from the sea - an admiration for their descendants who in later years laid a firm foundation and reared thereon the perfect and enduring Commonwealth. Throughout the work will be found hundreds of the names and many biographical notices of these men - men from whom have descended a large proportion of the population of the State, now numbering nearly three-quarters of a million. Excerpt from Myers' History of West Virginia, Vol. 1 of 2 TO the public: There are several reasons why this book was written. Firstly - There is no single volume or set of volumes which contains an up-to - date history of \yest Virginia. Lewis' History is the nearest approach. It is a good one. And fairly supplies the purpose for which it was intended, namely: a text book for use in the public schools; but the information it contains is in such abbreviated form and omits so many subjects that are really of such historical impor tance as to emphasize the need of a book of more extensive detail and covering a wider scope of information for the use of the general reading public. Secondly - There was need of a book which would revive and help perpetuate the memory of some almost forgotten heroes and heroines who opened and made easier the way for the succeeding generations of people. Excerpt from History and Government of West Virginia The idea of preparing a history of West Virginia as text-book for use in the public and private schools of the State was not born of a sudden impulse. For more than a quarter of a century the author has been engaged in public school work, and nearly all that time in active classwork in the schoolroom. While so engaged he became strongly impressed with the fact that any course of instruction is seriously defective if it does not include a study that enables pupils to grow familiar with the history of their own State and people. History is also entitled to a place in the curriculum because it possesses high value as a character-builder, because its subject-matter is in itself deeply interesting, and because it readily leads into other subjects of the school course. This book has been prepared for the use of schools, and its aim is to place in the hands of the children of West Virginia a faithful, non-sectarian and non-partisan history of the State in which they will eventually have to discharge the duties of citizens or residents. As West Virginia is one of the many States composing the Great Republic, enough of national history has been interwoven to enable the pupil to perceive in what manner and to what extent the local laws, customs and institutions of the State have been affected by events occurring in the progress of the Nation. Excerpt from The History and Government of West Virginia Part III concludes the work with a mere outline in bistori cal perspective of the origin and general structure of the Fed eral Union, which is essential to a perfect understanding of the State, whose existence the Union presupposes. This out line is intended as an introduction to the study of the Federal Constitution. While it is brief it contains quite as much as is usually devoted to this subject in a work of this character. The best informed educators in the theory and art of teaching are agreed that the attempt to teach our Federal system before the student has gained a knowledge of local govern ment, and particularly a knowledge of the government and institutions of his own State, is going at the subject from the wrong end. As brief as this part is, it will nevertheless be found to contain much that is not contained in any other work of a similar character, and in language so simple that it may not be misunderstood.
