Excerpt from The History of the Princes, the Lords Marcher, and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog, Vol. 2: And the Ancient Lords of Arwystli, Cedewen, and Meirionydd Wales being ye refuge and place of safeguard of ye remnat of ye Auncient Brytains (ye first inhabitants of ye ile of Great Brytannye) being driuen thither, and dispossessed by ye Saxon kings, and hauing taken from them ye fertile countryes of England, held ye same, and therein preserued their auncient blood royall of ye kings and auncient families, ye posteritie of the nation, their lawes, and ancient language, from ye furie and cruel murther of ye Saxons, between which twoe nations there continued implacable hatred and warrs;insomuch as notwithstanding that the Hepterchia, or seuen kingdomes of ye Saxons, wear reduced into one monarchic by Englered, king of ye west Saxons, and by him vnited and first called by ye name of England, yet had these Saxon kings of England neuer any obedience or subjection of ye Prince that ruled Wales, but they held Wales as absolute monarks, not acknowledginge any supreame vnder God; where the lawfull of Kydwallader, ye last Kinge of Brittany of the Brittish line, did rule and govern the countrey and people as their lawfull Kings and Princes all ye time of ye Saxon government. And in the end, when yt pleased God to send ye Normans, under ye conduct of William, their Duke, to make a conquest of England, and dispossessed ye Saxon issue of the Crowne, and vnrooted most of their nobilitye, and brought in their owne nation, and soe many alterations as is found to haue hapned to this land by that conquest; and after that William ye Conqueror had quietlie possessed ye kingdome of England, and. had pacified all troubles and tumults, yet did not (neither would ye Welesmen nor their prince) seeme to take any notice of that Conquest obteyned ouer ye Saxons (their professed enemies), or that yt concerned them any way, but accompted of yt as a warr between twoe strainge nations.
