The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) completed a hundred years in December 2020. In December 1920, the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental (MAO) College founded by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan in 1877, was transformed into AMU. Sir Syed also established the All India Mohammedan Educational Conference to infuse the subcontinent's Muslims with a spirit of modernism. This helped prepare the community, devastated in the aftermath of the Revolt of 1857, for new challenges. This book examines the critical role that the Aligarh Muslim University played in the making of the modern Indian Muslim. As Zakir Hussain, AMU alumnus, its former Vice-Chancellor and a former President of India, said over fifty years ago, 'The way Aligarh participates in various walks of national life will determine the place of Muslims in India's national life. The way India conducts itself towards Aligarh will determine largely, the form which our national life will acquire in the future.'

Modeled on Fitzroy Dearborn's highly successful International Dictionary of Historic Places , the International Dictionary of University Histories provides basic information on 200 institutions--location, description, sources of further information--followed by an extensive 3000 to 5000 word essay on each university's history. Entries on each university conclude with a Further Reading list, and most entries are illustrated. Coverage is world-wide, and entries range from the great medieval institutions (Oxford, Heidelberg, the Sorbonne) to the great historic universities of the United States, to the newer universities of Australia and South Africa, to the lesser-known universities of India, China, and Japan. More than 200 writers, researchers and archival departments of the universities themselves have contributed to the Dictionary . Entries include those universities with the most fascinating histories and those that have played important roles in the development of their own countries and in the furtherance of world scholarship.

Modern Indian History, particularly the Indian National Movement, has been one of the essential parts of UPSC Civil Services Examination and other competitive examinations conducted by Union Public Service Commission and State Public Service Commission. This book is written in lucid language, covering the timeline from 1707 to the modern times. A special feature of the book is that it mentions not only factual data about various topics but also gives information about different interpretations put forward by Western and Indian historians, with an integrated analysis. This makes the book equally useful for undergraduate students of History.
