Excerpt from Report of the Class of 1860 Our thirtieth anniversary will be observed by a class dinner, given at the revere house, boston, at P. M., 24 june, 1890, the evening before Commencement. Attendance will be free to all, the expense being met from the Class Fund. Wetmore will preside, and every effort will be made to have our meeting full of enjoyment. Let every man make his plans from now on so as to have his share of it. There will be some talking and music, but no one's pleasure shall be marred by the dread of being called on unless by previous arrangement. I know how that is myself. At the Commencement Class meeting in 1888, when this Dinner was decided upon, it was suggested that the Secretary should prepare for the occasion notes of the Class history supplementary to the Class Book of 1880. To do this it will be essential to hear from every man by May 15 at latest, to give time for arrangement and printing. Let each write me everything of any note that has hap pened to himself or family since 1880. I have every address' except those of Carter and Paul, which some of you may be able to tell me. Mention also any death or change of residence in the Class within your knowledge. Looking for a careful and timely response, in which should be included notice of intention to attend the Dinner. Excerpt from History of the Class of 1913 to October 1916 At the beginning of the second year, rejoicing in the newly acquired freedom of the Sophomore, we swaggered a bit, supremely secure in the self-satisfaction which comes only once in a lifetime. But we got over it eventually, and, as Juniors, smoked our pipes more thoughtfully and watched with speculative eyes the passing of the collegiate year. We began to make ourselves felt, and edited a Scarlet Letter which has been a model for ensuing volumes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the Class of 1884, Hamilton College, 1884-1914 The real merit of the book lies in the biographical and obituary Sketches of the men at Sometime enrolled with the Class, and in the statistical tables, based thereon. The half tone reproductions of graduate photographs of the men; the latest photographs of the dead; and recent photographs of the living, lend added interest to the Sketches. Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1864: Secretary's Report, No. 4; June, 1871 June, 1874 Time passes so rapidly, the months gliding almost imperceptibly into the years, that it is only when we meet some mile-stone on the road that we can realize how far we are getting along on our journey. When bidding farewell to each other and to our Alma Mater, we started forth to begin in earnest the work we had each selected as our own, the Triennial Reunion seemed so distant that we hardly gave it a thought; but even before some of us were fairly at work we had reached that halting place, had exchanged our hasty words of good cheer, had talked over the history of the past three years and the promises of those yet to come, and had again started on our journey. The years have flown by, and this Commencement finds us halting at the Decennial mile-post scarcely able to realize that our life's journey is nearly half completed. The Report which I have to present to the Class this year records naturally fewer changes than those which have preceded it. Most of us have only to record continued labors in our several professions and occupations; but it is a matter of congratulation that, in very many instances at least, these labors have resulted in marked progress. Some few have made changes in the character of their work, and those who, when the last Report was published, were still undecided as to their future career, have, for the most part, made their selection, and have fairly settled down to their life's work. Some have already acquired a reputation which bids fair in the future to add a lustre to the Class which claims them as its members. Excerpt from The History of Montgomery Classes, R. C. A History has been spoken of as a mere chain of facts, which serve the purpose of comparing knowledge, but this is the lesser half of the truth, for while we need the guidance of established facts, systematically arranged, and their true connection with preceding and succeeding events, we submit that by far the larger purpose of history is to unite ourselves with these facts, to fix our personal responsibility as heirs of the past, and to determine our present duty to ourselves and to others, in the light of such knowledge. If men and women were unrelated and individual units of humanity we might review the past and forecast the future with such pleasure as comes naturally from historical research, as we weave into one body the warp and the woof of the story of the centuries. But history, as we interpret it, is not knowledge merely, but in a higher sense it is power, for it is inclusive of those fine relationships that link men to their homes, their country and their God. In recent years there has been a wholesome revival of historical study, which finds development in local and general celebrations, in state and national expositions, in pageants and antique loans, in translation and reprint of the church records, cemetery inscriptions, and the papers preserved in the archives of state and nation. This is not a work of vanity or of self-aggrandizement, but a wholesome exercise of the mind and soul of the people, through which we get life's true bearings, and gain courage and inspiration with which to meet the days before us. Such study and research as may be provoked by this Classis History cannot help but weave its influences into our lives, and thus mould our character and direct our conduct.
