Excerpt from History and Government of Missouri The following chapters aim to give in reasonable compass the essential facts in the history and government of the state of Missouri. The author is fully aware that much of interest in the history of the state has been omitted and that many of the details of the state and local government have not been described. He has constantly kept in mind, however, the needs of those for whom this work is written, and also the limited amount of time in the public school curriculum that can be allotted to Missouri history and civics, and it is his hope that the book will fill its place acceptably in the work of the seventh and eighth grades or in the first year of the high school. The real teacher will not be satisfied with the necessarily brief discussions in the text, but will seek all available material with which to vitalize the subject and increase the interest of the pupils. Throughout the work the teacher should appeal as often as possible to the actual knowledge and experience of the class. In the confirmation or illustration of the various topics this appeal will always prove to be very stimulating and the results in most instances will be quite satisfactory. Excerpt from The Civil Government of the United States and the State of Missouri: And the History of Missouri 1. Reason for Government. - The Declaration of Independence proclaimed that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain "unalienable rights," or rights that can not be taken from them, and that "among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," and "that to secure these rights governments are instituted among men." This is the reason for government. Government is the result of investing certain officers with authority to protect the people in their right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Without government, life would be insecure, liberty uncertain, property valueless, and the varied pursuits of industry impossible. All civilized people have had government in some form, and the better they have become the more firmly established have been their governments. 2. Forms of Government. Excerpt from Missouri, Its State and Local Government In Virginia - The settlement of Virginia presents a phase of development quite distinct from that of New England, the difference being not in the results, but in the steps leading thereto. In Virginia we find govern mental control vested in centres of authority having jurisdiction over broad counties. These counties, consti toting the governmental units, were much larger than the townships of New England. Early Legislatures - In all the colonies there were representative assemblies. But while the members of the Virginia House of Burgesses sat for counties, those of the general courts of New England sat for town ships. A History of Missouri: Volume III, 1860 to 1875, now available in paperback with a new, up-to-date bibliography, follows the course of the state's history through the turbulent years of the Civil War and Reconstruction. Increasingly bitter confrontations over the questions of secession and neutrality divided Missourians irreparably in 1861, with the result that the state was represented in the armies both of the North and of the South. During the next four years, Missouri would be the scene of several important battles, including Wilson's Creek and Westport, and much bloody combat as secessionist guerrillas and Union militias engaged in constant encounters throughout the state. Indeed, Missouri probably saw more military encounters during the war than any other state. Out of the chaos, the Radical party emerged as a powerful political force seeking to eradicate pro-Confederate influences, and its efforts made the Reconstruction era as volatile as the war years had been. Jesse and Frank James, who had been part of Quantrill's guerrillas, continued to provoke disorder through their numerous bank and train robberies. In their efforts to establish a "new order," the Radicals effected a new, highly proscriptive constitution. In the long run, however, they were unable to eradicate the strong conservative influences in the state, and by the mid-1870s reaction set in. In addition to the important political events of the period, the social and economic conditions of the state immediately before, during, and after the war are treated in A History of Missouri: Volume III. Despite the ravages of war and political dispute, Missouri managed during Reconstruction to make impressive strides in economic development, education, and racial equality. The changes introduced by such industries as railroads, farming, and mining served to revitalize the state and to guarantee its future growth and development. This volume will be an essential resource for anyone--scholars, students, and general readers--interested in this crucial and important part of Missouri's history.

Excerpt from Government and Politics in Missouri It is somewhat difficult for most of us to get an idea of the size of the county in which we live. It is still more difficult to get an idea of the size of our state and we can hardly even imagine how large our whole United States is.
