Excerpt from Historical Sketches of the Wabash Valley Occasionally a man arises who has the historical instinct and takes a per sonal delight in unearthing and preserving the history, folk lore and legends of preceding generations. Such a man is J. Wesley Whicker, the author of the sketches that are printed in this volume. The year 1916 being the centennial of Indiana's statehood, brought forth more than usual interest in Indiana state history, and knowing of Mr. Whicker's interest in and study of the history of the Wabash Valley, it was suggested that he write a series of articles for publication in The Attica Ledger. He readily acquiesced and as soon as they began to appear they attracted wide attention, being very extensively reprinted by other papers in western Indiana and eastern Illinois. The intention had been at first to make them only local in scope, but many of the incidents narrated were interwoven with larger incidents and almost before he was aware they had extended until they covered the greater part of the central Wabash Valley. As appreciation of his work grew there arose a demand that the sketches be put into permanent form and it is to meet that demand that this volume is printed. The issue is limited to two hundred copies, many of which will find a resting place in local libraries thruout the state. The sketches appear just as they did in the columns of The Ledger, and were often prepared hurriedly amid the press of other business, so that the literary critic may find in them much to criticize. However, since they reflect the intimate life of the people that developed one of the finest sections of the United States the critic will also find in them much of literary value in addition to their worth from the historical standpoint. Excerpt from Pastime Sketches: Scenes and Events at the Mouth of Eel on the Historic Wabash; With Papers Read Before the Cass County, Indiana, Historical Society at Its Spring Meetings, 1907 There was one particularly charming spot in the Wabash Valley designated on the charts of the wilderness as the Mouth of Eel. Two rivers flowed through forests of magnificent grandeur, met and journeyed onward hand in hand to mingle with the waters of the Ohio and later add to the majesty of the Mississippi. The point of juncture of the Wabash and Eel seemed a fitting site for a great city. There were high hills to the north and south and beautiful hills between the two rivers. Many islands then dotted the rivers, the climate was healthful and wild game abounded. And so at the Mouth of Eel log cabins sprung up, trading posts were established and a home-made sign an nounced a tavern with entertainment for man and beast. Excerpt from History of Fountain County, Together With Historic Notes on the Wabash Valley: Gleaned From Early Authors, Old Maps and Manuscripts, Private and Official Correspondence, and Other Authentic, Though, for the Most Part Out-of-the-Way Sources The biographical department contains the names and private sketches of nearly every person of importance 111 each township. A few persons, whose sketches we should be pleased to have pre sented, for various reasons refused Or delayed furnishing us with the desired information, and in, this matter only we feel that our work is incomplete. However, in most of such cases we have obtained, in regard to the most important persons, some items, and have woven them into the county or township sketches, so that, as we believe, we cannot be accused either part-iality or prejudice.
