Excerpt from Historical and Descriptive Anecdotes of Steam-Engines, and of Their Inventors and Improvers, Vol. 2 Mr. Matthew Wasbrough was born at Bristol in 1753. As the best evidence of the estimation in which he was held by his townsmen, we quote the record of his death, in his twenty-eighth ear, from the Bristol Gazette of 1781. Excerpt from The Boyhood of an Inventor America's supremacy in industrially applied science is often attributed to her patent system. It is the belief of the writer, however, that individual liberty, peace of mind, and freedom from political terrors accounts to a greater extent for the fact that citizens of the United States have made more revolutionary inventions, and in a greater variety of fields, than all the world else combined. And these great inventions are born of the poor as often as of the well-to-do, and much oftener than of the rich. It is not believed, however, that the real inventors, as distinguished from the improver of other people's inventions, are ever driven to their efforts by a desire for great wealth, but rather, like other artists, the musician, the painter, the sculptor, the poet, by a love of creative effort. It's a hobby, a plaything outside one's daily employment. Of course it is also true that but very, very few of those who have hobbies, and still fewer of all those who work, ever make great inventions. Is it then an accident? If not, is it possible to discover how these few differ mentally from those about them? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from James Watt When the publishers asked me to write the Life of Watt, I declined, stating that my thoughts were upon other matters. This settled the question, as I supposed, but in this I was mistaken. Why shouldn't I write the Life of the maker of the steam-engine, out of which I had made fortune? Besides, I knew little of the history of the Steam Engine and of Watt him self, and the surest way to obtain knowledge was to comply with the publisher's highly complimentary request. In short, the subject would not down, and finally, I was compelled to write again, telling them that the idea haunted me, and if they still desired me to undertake it, I should do so with my heart in the task. I now know about the steam-engine, and have also had revealed to me one of the finest characters that ever graced the earth. For all this I am deeply grateful to the publishers. I am indebted to friends, Messrs. Angus Sinclair and Edward R. Cooper, for editing my notes upon Scientific and Mechanical points. The result is this volume. If the public, in reading, have one tithe of the pleasure I have had in writing it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. James Watt transformed steam engine technology by inventing the condensing engine. He collaborated with Matthew Boulton to form a engineering firm in 1773, which went on to monopolise production of steam engines in England. This book examines the role they played in the history of invention and development of steam engine.

Excerpt from James Watt and the Steam Engine: The Memorial Volume Prepared for the Committee of the Watt Centenary Commemoration at Birmingham 1919 The preparation of the material for the Memorial Volume was entrusted to the present Authors with wide discretionary powers and with sufficient funds to carry out the work. They take this Opportunity of thanking the Committee for their confidence and of stating that for the matter contained in the volume they take entire responsibility. They would add that its preparation has been to them a work of very great interest. James Watt was one of the few really great inventors who have been recognized as such during their lifetimes. Even to-day, over a hundred years after his death, his name is perhaps the best and most widely known among inventors. The object of the present work is not to glorify further the inventor, but rather to discuss critically the origin of the invention, the steps by which it was reduced to a practical form, and the development of the steam engine by him and under his direction, as well as the conditions and environment in which the development was effected. Accordingly it stops with the retirement of Watt from active business in the year 1800. From some points of View this is to be regretted, since the succeeding years up to the time of his death present features of much interest in the development of the steam engine, of mechanical engineering, and of the engine works at Soho. Excerpt from Life of John Fitch, the Inventor of the Steam-Boat The cotemporaries of John Fitch have nearly all passed from the stage of life. To a new generation appeal is made for jus tice to the memory of one whose fame has long been obscured by an usurped credit, improperly allowed to another. If the present age does not, posterity, it is hoped, will, reverse, as far as is now possible, the foreboding prophecy of the derided and despised genius, written in 1791: The day will come when some more powerful man will get fame and riches from my inven tion but nobody will believe that poor John Fitch can do any thing worthy of attention. Excerpt from The Steam Engine and the Indicator The early chapters refer especially to the history of the steam engine, and to the theory of the action of steam in the cylinder of a steam engine, and the succeeding ones to the application of the theory in practice. Having felt personally the want of more practical informa tion on the subject than is contained in existing works, it has been the aim of the writer to supply such want, and to enable those who have not the opportunity of making experiments to gain a more intimate knowledge of the indicator. And it is hoped that the directions here given for the practical applica tion of this instrument will at the same time give the volume a considerable degree of interest to those engineers who are conversant with its ordinary working, but lack a knowledge of the principles involved. Excerpt from The Indicator and Dynamometer: With Their Practical Applications to the Steam-Engine The Indicator is one of W'att's inventions, upon which he was accustomed to place great reliance; and it may not, perhaps, be too much to say, that, in his hands, it contrib uted mainly to his successive improvements of the Steam engine. After his patent had expired, and the Engine had become public property, the various makers, it seems, did not at first sufficiently value this useful instrument for we find Farey, in his work on Steam, complaining that Steam-engines had rather retrograded from neglecting it. However that may be, such is not the case now; for every engine maker is careful to apply it, as the best means of testing the working condition of his engine; yet even now there are many classes of people connected with the Steam engine, such as officers commanding steam-vessels and en gineers, to whom a fuller description of the instrument.
