This comprehensive book is an exploration of the history of veterinary medicine from the ancient world to the present as well as an examination of the development of man’s relationship with animals through early domestication, usage for food, fiber, traction, and transport to the current therapies and companion animals. The development of the discipline of veterinary medicine is explored through the transition from art to science and man’s deeper understanding of animals through research and investigation. It is now possible to read both the recorded 4000-year history of animal disease and veterinary development together with the story of the animal-human relationships and welfare as one cohesive text, with extensive backup. The book is organized so that it can be read in a linear manner, or for those researching a particular topic, by direct access to specific content. The species covered in detail are equine, bovine, ovine, caprine, porcine, canine, feline, avian, and aquatic, on every continent. The History of Veterinary Medicine and the Animal-Human Relationship is both an informative read and a definitive reference text for veterinary historians, veterinary history societies, veterinary librarians, and archivists.

This book is about medical beliefs and practices for animals in early modern England. Although there are numerous texts on human health, this is the first to focus exclusively on animals during this period. For most academics, the foundation of the London Veterinary College in 1791 marks the beginning of 'modern' veterinary medicine, with the period before unworthy of serious study. In fact, there is ample evidence of how the importance of animals resulted in a highly complex system of both preventative and remedial care. This book is divided into sections which start by 'setting the scene' with an overview of animals in early modern England and the contemporary principles behind health and illness. It moves onto an examination of the medical marketplace and printed literature on animal health care, followed by an in-depth look at preventative and remedial methods. It ends by addressing the question of what impact, if any, new colleges had on veterinary beliefs and practices.

A Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2008 A Cultural History of Animals in the Medieval Age investigates the changing roles of animals in medieval culture, economy and society in the period 1000 to 1400. The period saw significant changes in scientific and philosophical approaches to animals as well as their representation in art. Animals were omnipresent in medieval everyday life. They had enormous importance for medieval agriculture and trade and were also hunted for food and used in popular entertainments. At the same time, animals were kept as pets and used to display their owner's status, whilst medieval religion attributed complex symbolic meanings to animals. A Cultural History of Animals in the Medieval Age presents an overview of the period and continues with essays on the position of animals in contemporary symbolism, hunting, domestication, sports and entertainment, science, philosophy, and art.
