This book is a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of laws and institutions in Spain from the reign of the Catholic Monarchs to the dawn of the twentieth century, delving into the rich history of a country that has undergone major transformations over the centuries. The first chapters focus on the transition from medieval to modern times, a period marked by the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. The War of the Castilian Succession, the peace treaties with Portugal and the incorporation of the Kingdom of Granada are examined in depth. This analysis is not limited to historical facts, but also addresses the military, administrative and cultural consequences of these events. An intermediate chapter deals with dynastic changes and the religious paradigm in the 18th century. The last part deals with the 19th and early 20th centuries. It describes the process of the restoration of the Ancien Régime and the very important consequences this had in terms of the preservation of public order. Then, from a liberal perspective, the integration of revolutionary myths into the institutions of the time is exemplified. This part culminates with a detailed study of the liberal revolts and late absolutism, providing a unique insight into this tumultuous period of Spanish history. It closes with an analysis of the crisis of the turnist system of the Restoration, the effects of the First World War in Spain and the phenomenon of military juntism, which provides a valuable insight into the challenges and changes that Spain faced during this period.Manuela Fernández Rodríguez is a tenured lecturer at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in the area of History of Law and Institutions.Among the lines of research she has worked on throughout her academic career are those related to security, public order and the enjoyment of rights and freedoms in contemporary times. Most of her publications focus on the Spanish field, although she is also well versed in the institutional framework of the European Union and gamification, as co-director of the Master’s Degree on Gamification, Game-based Learning and Serious Games at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.

Vulnerability has become part of our everyday vocabulary. We are used to hearing that we ought to act so as to protect the highly vulnerable; the qualifier suggests that we are all vulnerable. In addition to being of contemporary relevance, the notion of vulnerability has also been at the heart of philosophical reflection since the birth of the discipline, playing a vital role across many different traditions. Its prevalence is unsurprising. Vulnerability, which partially defines us as human beings, has appeared in many guises: mortality, finitude, sin, ignorance, etc. However, no attempt has yet been made to fully apply the notion of vulnerability to the domains of epistemology and the philosophy of science, to relate it to our general human vulnerability, and to explore the wide range of consequences that derive from it. The contributors of this book fill this gap; they present new approaches to classical problems. They highlight different aspects of our cognitive vulnerability, from issues related to the realism/antirealism debate to reflections on epistemic success and trust.

A radical rewriting of the history of fourth-century Latin literature This book rediscovers a lost history of the Roman Empire, written by Sextus Aurelius Victor (ca. 320-390) and demonstrates for the first time both the contemporary and lasting influence of his historical work. Though little regarded today, Victor is the best-attested historian of the later Roman Empire, read by Jerome and Ammianus, honoured with a statue by the pagan Emperor Julian and appointed to a prestigious prefecture by the Christian Theodosius. Through careful analysis of the ancient evidence, including newly discovered material, this book re-examines the two short imperial histories attributed to Victor in the manuscripts, known today as the Caesares and the Epitome de Caesaribus, and discusses a wide range of both canonical and neglected authors and texts, from Sallust and Tacitus to Eunapius and the Historia Augusta. By providing a new account of the original scope and scale of Victor’s Historia, this book revolutionises our understanding of the writing of history in late antiquity. Not only does it have profound implications for the transmission of Classical texts in the Middle Ages and the history of Classical scholarship, but it also solves some of the enduring mysteries of later Latin literature.

The relationship between law and religion is evident throughout history. They have never been completely independent from each other. There is no doubt that religion has played an important role in providing the underlying values of modern laws, in setting the terms of the relationship between the individual and the state, and in demanding a space for the variety of intermediate institutions which stand between individuals and the state. However, the relationships between law and religion, and the state and religious institutions differ significantly from one modern state to another. There is not one liberalism but many. This work brings together reflections upon the relationship between religion and the law from the perspectives of different sub-traditions within the broader liberal project and in light of some contemporary problems in the accommodation of religious and secular authority.
