If you have ever picked up a Bible, attended a church, or entered into a spiritual conversation with a Christian, you are probably well acquainted with these two terms: "God" and "the Lord". Both are frequently used in reference to the creator of the heavens and the earth. For many people, those words actually represent His name. What about to you? Is "God" His name? Or, is it "the Lord"? His Name Forever is a must read for anyone who wants to know His true name. It is a book that will help you understand why all those other terms ever used are not His Name Forever. There is a Story Behind the Name of God that explains its significance to Him and to those who have worshiped Him in times past. There is only one name that He revealed as His own. Is that name even relevant today? As you read, you will see that this one name did not change, but people did. From the time of Seth in the Old Testament to the era of the Messiah in the New Testament, the Almighty One had the same name. This book will explain, in an easy to follow way, why so few people, even today, call Him by His name. After reading this book that is well-researched and supported by biblical and other historical documents, you will be challenged to call Him by His Name Forever.

This monograph is a comparative, socio-linguistic reassessment of the Deuteronomic idiom, leshakken shemo sham, and its synonymous biblical reflexes in the Deuteronomistic History, lashum shemo sham, and lihyot shemo sham. These particular formulae have long been understood as evidence of the Name Theology - the evolution in Israelite religion toward a more abstracted mode of divine presence in the temple. Utilizing epigraphic material gathered from Mesopotamian and Levantine contexts, this study demonstrates that leshakken shemo sham and lashum shemo sham are loan-adaptations of Akkadian shuma shakanu, an idiom common to the royal monumental tradition of Mesopotamia. The resulting retranslation and reinterpretation of the biblical idiom profoundly impacts the classic formulation of the Name Theology.

The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. Our prayers must be genuine, but what God wants from us in prayer may not readily spring to mind: for example, to honor the holiness of God’s name, or to pray for people who abuse us. Does merely adding God turn a wish into a prayer? How is prayer related to our understanding of who God is, his omniscience, love, and power? In prayer we expect God to act, but how does that relate to our own love and work? We pray “in the name of Jesus.” So what difference does it make that God’s Son became flesh, suffered, died, and lives again? How does the Holy Spirit lead in prayer? Why does the Bible provide us with actual prayers? Do language, literary form, location, time and body-language matter? And what does it mean that the apostle cautions (Rom 8:26): “For we do not know how to pray as we ought”? Stay, Watch, Pray tackles these questions and more.

The Hekhalot literature is a motley collection of textually fluid and often textually corrupt documents in Hebrew and Aramaic which deal with mystical themes pertaining especially to God's throne-chariot (the Merkavah). They were composed between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, with roots in earlier traditions and a long and complex subsequent history of transmission. This volume presents English translations of eclectic critical texts, with a full apparatus of variants, of most of the major Hekhalot documents: Hekhalot Rabbati; Sar Torah; Hekhalot Zutarti; Ma'aseh Merkavah; Merkavah Rabba; briefer macroforms: The Chapter of R. Nehuniah ben HaQanah, The Great Seal-Fearsome Crown, Sar Panim, The Ascent of Elijah ben Avuyah, and The Youth; and the Hekhalot fragments from the Cairo Geniza.

The collections of prayers, blessings and hymns indicate that fixed prayers were already customary within Judaism during the period of the Second Temple within sectarian circles. In the light of the prayer texts from Qumran the author conducts a systematic study of Jewish prayer beginning with its biblical traditions, through its development during the Second Temple period, and down to rabbinic prayer.
