Hightstown Borough and East Windsor Township are two neighboring New Jersey communities steeped in history. Over the years, the two towns have seen numerous important developments in agriculture and the area has served as a hub for small-town commerce and railroad travel. Several notable historic figures made their way through the region over the years as well, including Clara Barton, the Marquis de Lafayette, Horace Greeley, Phineas T. Barnum, and Woodrow Wilson.

The historic gristmill, railroad and farms and homes of Hightstown are revealed here in postcard images. Located in the easternmost pocket of Mercer County, New Jersey, Hightstown traces its beginnings to 1747, when John Hight bought an 80-acre parcel alongside Rocky Brook. He built a gristmill there, abutting the road that became Main Street. The mill attracted other small enterprises, including a dry goods store, two taverns, a blacksmith shop, and sawmill. With the rise of the steam engine, the town grew to become a thriving transportation hub. As this community evolved into a contemporary downtown corridor, the farms and homes spread across what is today both the borough and East Windsor Township. The advent of the automobile, retirement of the rail line, and construction of the New Jersey Turnpike challenged Hightstown's role as a destination. With a recently established historic district and strong downtown association, the town is enjoying a rebirth as a treasure of America's past and present.

A compelling memoir—"hilarious and heartbreaking" (The New York Times)—of two intertwined journeys: a Jewish refugee family in Ukraine fleeing persecution and a young man seeking to reclaim a shattered past In the twilight of the Cold War (the late 1980s), nine-year old Lev Golinkin and his family cross the Soviet border, leaving Ukraine with only ten suitcases, $600, and the vague promise of help awaiting in Vienna. Years later, Lev, now an American adult, sets out to retrace his family's long trek, locate the strangers who fought for his freedom, and in the process, gain a future by understanding his past. This is the vivid, darkly comic, and poignant story of Lev Golinkin in the confusing and often chilling final decade of the Soviet Union, and "of a Jewish family’s escape from oppression ... whose drama, hope and heartache Mr. Golinkin captures brilliantly” (The New York Times). It's also the story of Lev Golinkin as an American man who finally confronts his buried past by returning to Austria and Eastern Europe to track down the strangers who made his escape possible ... and say thank you. Written with biting, acerbic wit and emotional honesty in the vein of Gary Shteyngart, Jonathan Safran Foer, and David Bezmozgis, Golinkin's search for personal identity set against the relentless currents of history is more than a memoir—it's a portrait of a lost era. This is a thrilling tale of escape and survival, a deeply personal look at the life of a Jewish child caught in the last gasp of the Soviet Union, and a provocative investigation into the power of hatred and the search for belonging. Lev Golinkin achieves an amazing feat—and it marks the debut of a fiercely intelligent, defiant, and unforgettable new voice.

In June, 1991 sitting in his hospital room contemplating cardiac bypass surgery my father said, “Vus ich hot adorch geleibt!” (What I have lived through!) I wasn’t sure at the time if he meant his recent heart attack but over time especially after researching his journey it became clear to me. I thought I knew my dad’s plight only to realize some of his most horrible experiences were never brought to my attention. The adage of the first casualty of war is the truth hung in the balance with loss and trauma deserves its own sanctity. Helen Friedman and Sam Bagel walked through the shadows of death, lost their entire nuclear families, and like the Phoenix bird re-emerges from its own ashes, they too resurrected themselves to start a family, be happy and thankful people.
