In Run 2 at the Tevatron, the upgraded CDF and D0 experiments will have greatly improved sensitivity in the search for the Higgs bosons of the Standard Model and minimal supersymmetry. In the past year the Higgs Working Group of the Tevatron Run 2 SUSY/Higgs Workshop has estimated the discovery and exclusion reach for the Higgs, combining all possible search channels and utilizing all the upgraded features of both detectors. The results give strong motivation to continue the next run of the Tevatron into Run 3, with an eventual goal of up to 20 fb-1 or more delivered per experiment.

Recent results from searches for the SM and SUSY Higgs bosons in Run 1 at the Tevatron have been shown. The sensitivity of the present SM Higgs searches at the Tevatron is limited by statistics leading to a reach in p[bar p][r-arrow] VH production more than an order of magnitude higher than the SM prediction. The search for the neutral SUSY Higgs via p[bar p][r-arrow] b[bar b][psi][r-arrow] b[bar b]b[bar b] excludes regions in the tan[beta] vs M[sub A] space which extend significantly those previously probed by LEP. They have presented results from studies of the discovery and sensitivity reach for the Higgs bosons in Run 2. Combining all search channels and the data from both experiments a SM Higgs can be excluded at 95% CL over the full mass range M[sub H]

Addressing the need for an up-to-date reference on silicon devices and heterostructures, Beyond the Desert 99 reviews the technology used to grow and characterize Goup IV alloy films. It covers the theory, device design, and simulation of heterojunction transistors, emphasizing their relevance in developing the technologies involving strained layers; device design and simulation of conventional silicon bipolar transistors and SiGe HBTs at room and low temperatures; and device design and simulation for MOSFETs, including SiGe and strained-Si channel MOSFETs. The book concludes with simulations and examples of different applications. It provides a unified reference for scientists and engineers investigating the use of SiGe and strained silicon in a new generation of high-speed circuit applications.

The recent observation of the Higgs boson has been hailed as the scientific discovery of the century and led to the 2013 Nobel Prize in physics. This book describes the detailed science behind the decades-long search for this elusive particle at the Large Electron Positron Collider at CERN and at the Tevatron at Fermilab and its subsequent discovery and characterization at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Written by physicists who played leading roles in this epic search and discovery, this book is an authoritative and pedagogical exposition of the portrait of the Higgs boson that has emerged from a large number of experimental measurements. As the first of its kind, this book should be of interest to graduate students and researchers in particle physics.

Despite the great success of the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions to describe the phenomena observed in high energy physics experiments, the mechanism by which the elementary particles are endowed with their masses is yet to be unraveled. Does nature choose the Higgs mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking as predicted by the standard model, or do we need some alternative explanation? The purpose of the workshop is to capture new trends and ideas in this exciting area of fundamental physics, and to explore the potential of recent (LEPI), present (HERA, LEPII, SLC, Tevatron), and future (FMC, LHC, NLC) colliding-beam experiments to shed light on the Higgs puzzle.

This Thesis describes the first measurement of, and constraints on, Higgs boson production in the vector boson fusion mode, where the Higgs decays to b quarks (the most common decay channel), at the LHC. The vector boson fusion mode, in which the Higgs is produced simultaneously with a pair of quark jets, provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the detailed properties of the Higgs, including the possibility of parity and CP violation, as well as its couplings and mass. It thus opens up this new field of study for precision investigation as the LHC increases in energy and intensity, leading the way to this new and exciting arena of precision Higgs research.

At the crossing of centuries, it is very important to review the main problems and research in theoretical physics. This was the purpose of the International Workshop on Frontiers of Theoretical Physics, allowing the interchange of ideas among people with different expertise. The proceedings can be divided into two parts: (1) general view talks about string, particle physics, nuclear physics, etc. given by Profs. T Yoneya, M Kobayazhi, A Sanda, Z Li and F Sakata; (2) research related to many important fields, such as quantum field theory, string theory, particle physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics and mathematical physics.
