North East England is rarely associated with the African slave trade, but research has shown that the region was inextricably involved in that shocking state-sanctioned traffic in human beings. This title reveals the links between some of the North East's wealthiest, most prominent families and the plantations of the New World.

Markov chains and hidden Markov chains have applications in many areas of engineering and genomics. This book provides a basic introduction to the subject by first developing the theory of Markov processes in an elementary discrete time, finite state framework suitable for senior undergraduates and graduates. The authors then introduce semi-Markov chains and hidden semi-Markov chains, before developing related estimation and filtering results. Genomics applications are modelled by discrete observations of these hidden semi-Markov chains. This book contains new results and previously unpublished material not available elsewhere. The approach is rigorous and focused on applications.

Here is a work that adds much to the sum of our knowledge in a key area of science today. It is concerned with the estimation of discrete-time semi-Markov and hidden semi-Markov processes. A unique feature of the book is the use of discrete time, especially useful in some specific applications where the time scale is intrinsically discrete. The models presented in the book are specifically adapted to reliability studies and DNA analysis. The book is mainly intended for applied probabilists and statisticians interested in semi-Markov chains theory, reliability and DNA analysis, and for theoretical oriented reliability and bioinformatics engineers.

The study of ecological systems is often impeded by components that escape perfect observation, such as the trajectories of moving animals or the status of plant seed banks. These hidden components can be efficiently handled with statistical modeling by using hidden variables, which are often called latent variables. Notably, the hidden variables framework enables us to model an underlying interaction structure between variables (including random effects in regression models) and perform data clustering, which are useful tools in the analysis of ecological data. This book provides an introduction to hidden variables in ecology, through recent works on statistical modeling as well as on estimation in models with latent variables. All models are illustrated with ecological examples involving different types of latent variables at different scales of organization, from individuals to ecosystems. Readers have access to the data and R codes to facilitate understanding of the model and to adapt inference tools to their own data.

Dragon shifters, fake identities, and betrayal; secrets that will either turn two strangers into bitter enemies or forge a passionate, burning love with the strength to last an eternity… Sent halfway across the world in her identical twin sister’s place to sign a contract with a reclusive billionaire, Katy Toure has no idea what she’s walking into. Before she signs anything, however, she meets the most amazing, drop-dead gorgeous man of her dreams. Even if all she can have with him is one night, she can’t resist the hunger in his eyes or the way he makes her body sing. Ryker Draquonir, king of the dragon shifters, takes one look at the woman sent to sign a contract with him, a contemporary marriage of convenience, and knows she is an impostor. Fate has stepped in after centuries on his own to give him his heart’s desire; for the woman standing before him is his true mate. Ancient Draquonir law forbids Ryker from revealing the existence of dragons and other magical creatures to her before he has claimed her, so if he wants a chance at happily ever after, he will have to seduce her to get it; woo her as only a billionaire can. Dragons love to hunt, and he will do anything to capture his true mate’s heart. *** If you love magic and paranormal romance in the style of Christine Feehan, J.R. Ward, Lara Adrian, S. E. BECOMING! A piece of canvas becomes a work of art Once the artist makes his final mark. A piece of stone becomes a sculpture Once the sculptor chips away the last chip. For a poet, A plain piece of paper becomes a priceless gem Once he finally lifts his pen. God is the artist That's painting beauty within the heart of our soul. God is the sculptor. That's chipping away at the flaws in our character To make us into His perfect image. God is the poet That would turn the plainness of our lives Into poetic praise. Just outside Toronto, a 14-year-old Canadian girl was auctioned on the internet for men to purchase by the hour. A young woman was taken by slave traders from an African war zone to Edmonton to earn greater profits by exploiting her in prostitution. A gang called Wolfpack recruited teenagers in Quebec and sold them for sex to high-profile men in the community. The global problem of human trafficking is only beginning to be recognized in Canada, even though it has been hidden in plain sight. In Invisible Chains, Benjamin Perrin, an award-winning law professor and policy expert, exposes cases of human trafficking, recording in-depth interviews with people on the front lines--police officers, social workers, and the victims themselves--and bringing to light government records released under access-to-information laws.
