Warrior Mother is the true story of a mother’s fierce love and determination, and her willingness to go outside the bounds of the ordinary when two of her three adult children are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases. When Sheila Collins’s best friend, dying of breast cancer, asked her to accompany her through what turned out to be the last fourteen days of her life, she didn’t know that the experience was preparing her for what lay ahead with her own children. In the years that followed, Collins had to face both her son’s diagnosis with AIDS and her daughter’s diagnosis with breast cancer. Warrior Mother documents how she faces these challenges and the issues accompanying them—from learning to be the mother of a gay son to visiting a healer in Brazil on her daughter’s behalf when she decides on bone marrow transplant treatment. Experience as a professional social worker and family therapist doesn’t always help Collins to cope with her children’s illnesses—but her relationship with improvisational song, dance, storytelling, and women’s spirituality rituals carries her through. Warrior Mother follows Collins’s family through memorials and celebrations of lives well lived, all the while exploring the impact of grief on those left behind and the rituals that help them heal.

Linked stories of four lonely city dwellers by the New York Times–bestselling author of A Three Dog Life: “A gem” (The Village Voice). “A lonely hermit, a dead cobbler, a teenage runaway, and a fifty-four-year-old virgin star in this . . . collection of poignant short stories set on New York’s Upper West Side. In concise, deft prose, Thomas interweaves tales of ordinary people coping with urban malaise. The first piece describes Walter, a sci-fi writer, pondering the value of his existence after his wife walks out. After Walter is cheered up by Mexican rooftop singers, the narrative shifts to his troubled neighbor, Edith. An overweight, sexually frustrated woman, Edith’s unusual antics include pocketing her dying mother’s jewelry and leaving flowers in the trash for a homeless woman. As Edith and Walter come to grips with their loneliness, the chaotic New York milieu is a vital force invigorating their lives. After a fourteen-year old runs away in search of her older sister in the penultimate story, the collection ends with an adulteress struggling to move her dead lover’s body, still clad in her husband’s pajamas. In portraying each of her four characters, Thomas captures the subtle details of city life with elegance, flair, wit, and comic timing.” —Boston Review “Thomas has a way with details that makes for endings as bittersweet as her beginnings.” —Publishers Weekly “An entertaining, cohesive, and well-written volume.” —Booklist

Covering entertaining to dessert for all to enjoy. The nudge for this book has come from the feedback cooking for beautiful women on a wellness retreat, Akashic wellness retreats at Camp Island. For the past 30 years or more I have had a passion for food and cooking. Cooking for many years, had my own little cafe and catering businesses amongst wearing many other hats. I have also suffered gut issues for many years, finally 3 years ago diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I have gone down the path of alternative medicine. If you have any sort of gut issues I highly recommend a food intolerance test and see a good naturopath. I always knew I was lactose intolerant… but I wasn’t aware of wheat, gluten, tomato and so forth. Dr. Rowena Kissun – Kissun clinics in the Whitsundays was absolutely amazing to me. Rowena took time and explained everything in terms I could understand and the importance of knowing what upsets your person. Its very overwhelming at first diagnoses… but there are some good products and produce out there now. With some help of easy and tasty recipes like these you will enjoy some simple delicious food like everyone else. As a single mother for many years and always had a house full of teenage boys. I am queen of making something from not much in the pantry… and then create another dinner out of leftovers if there were any. Gluten is really not good for any of us. Hopefully with this book you will NOT feel all bloated and need a nanna nap after a bowl of pasta! I love feeding people and I love it when people are enjoying gluten free and lactose free food. I hope you enjoy! Bon Appetit
