Excerpt from Herbart and the Herbartians The purpose of this volume is to give a. Bird's-eye view of Herbart and his doctrines of education, both as presented by himself, and as developed by his suc cessors. In English-speaking countries his system of educational thought is for most teachers still in the stage of exposition; furthermore, the beginner in every well-organized, far-reaching system is always in need of an introduction. To the teacher, therefore, who inquires for the leadingpurposes of this school, and the methods whereby it is sought to realize them, this book attempts an intelligible answer. It concerns itself but little with Herbart's metaphysics, and rigorously refrains from introducing confusing refine ments of doctrine. It confines its attention strictly to essentials. Only epoch-making men and their chief contributions are considered at all. If, therefore, amon'g so many men worthy of mention, so few are treated, and even with these the discussion confined to essentials, the reason must be sought in the pur pose to make clear to the inquiring teacher what the Herbartians are trying to do and how they are trying to do it. Excerpt from Notes of Lessons on the Herbartian Method: Based on Herbert's Plan The main idea in the Herbartian system of psychology is that the mind is built up of its own contents. Herbart, following Locke, not only denies the existence of innate ideas, but puts contemptuously aside the doctrine of inborn faculties or capacities for acquiring knowledge. According to him, and others of his school, the mind possesses but one single original power: that of entering into relation with externals. Given this power, the mind at certain points of contact receives into itself presentations (sense percepts), each reception causing growth or as he would put it, widening the circle of thought But these mental contents are not often merely passive, they most frequently become presen tative activities, their force and suggestiveness being increased every time one returns to the surface of con sciousness. By a process of selection and assimilation new presentations are joined to old, while the earliest and most simple by their interaction produce others of varying complexity. Excerpt from Introduction to the Herbartian Principles of Teaching Our educational text-books, in the past, have ftc quently been full of practical details, but lacking in guiding principles. We are beginning to atone for our past neglect of educational theory, and to recognise that a study of principles and ideals of education is of greater import ance than a study of the external devices employed by the teacher to make the child acquire knowledge. The subject taught is secondary to the manner of teaching, and the question for the teacher is not, What does the child know but, What is his moral worth? Excerpt from The Critics of Herbartianism: And Other Matter Contributory to the Study of the Herbartian Question During the last twenty years two phenomena have been notice able to observers of the educational world - a steady increase in the influence of the Herbartian system, and a series of vigorous attacks upon that system from various quarters of the Father land. The former phenomenon has been patent to all, the second to those who have followed the course of events abroad. It is Germany, the land in which Herbartianism is indigenous, which has presented the world with supposed antidotes. Excerpt from The Secret of Herbart: An Essay on Education and a Reply to Professor James of Harvard The public - whose favourable reception of several recent works by the present writer has moved his grateful. Thanks - deserve an apology for the appearance of a new book on the old subject. There is nothing here that is positively fresh, nothing that cannot be inferred by any one who chooses to think out the implications of the apper ception doctrine. Neither does the work contri bute to the department of methodology; the writer feels that others, with more varied experience and more opportunities for observation than have fallen to his lot, can speak with far greater authority than he upon matters of that kind; and, indeed, with two such Herbartians as Professors Adams and Findlay at work upon questions of methodo logy, there is no need to anticipate any neglect of this department. He has therefore abandoned for the time the task of presenting a system of Herbartian doctrine, and has preferred rather to expound the one or two central thoughts which constitute its essence, and seem so vitally needed by the education of to-day; thoughts which have a closer bearing upon the character and the destiny. Of the nation than any other thoughts that he can expound. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
