Initialed twice by Knox. Reference's Jackson's two letters of 12 June. Says the goals of his negotiations seem practicable. Tells him to Be Snug and dont let it slip through your fingers. States that the difficulty of any one companys holding more than one million [acres] may be obviated by using different names. Says that Royal Flint can be the representative of another company for them. Says he can also get respectable names for a third and fourth. Tells him to secure as much land as possible as long as it is not over 4 million acres. Claims if their asking price is 14 cents in paper at 12/6 they will probably take 7 in cash on interest or perhaps 8. Reminds Jackson that Samuel Ogden was offered 10 cents per acre but He having resigned & cannot resume his claim. Underscores that Jackson is to Secure as much as possible on the Kennebec and Penobscot Rivers at as low a rate as possible. Is happy that Oliver Smith is compliant. Advises him to Be cool - dont appear too eager - But be decided and conclude this good agreement at all events. Does not know if there is a legal provision for the head of the hospital department, but plans to look into it. Says if he can offer it, Mr. [William] Eustis will have the office.

Informs Knox that [Samuel] Ogden is very disappointed that he has not been able to purchase the western Lands due to the breakdown in negotiations with the Gentlemen who were supposed to make that happen. Says he is confident that Ogden will ultimately succeed by calling on his powerful friends in the legislature. Informs Knox that the petition respecting the Waldo patent will be refer'd over to the next Sessions of the Court. Notes the General Heath resign'd his Commission of Major General of this Division, and on Friday the Senate chose me by a large majority but the House elected Brigr General Thayer. He heard that the Senate intends to remain strong in its choice. Free stamped on address leaf with no signature.

Says he wrote to William Constable. Found out from a letter from Constable written to another person, that He suspected that Jackson, and I, had a purchase in contemplation - how he discovered this, I do not know? In his letter, Constable stated that he thought it was too far into the legislative session to complete the deal. Says If he meant this his opperations will be postponed untill next winter - you can best determine what steps ought to be taken in the mean time with the Committee. Asks Knox to forward an enclosed letter (not included) to a French gentleman at Fort Pitt.
