Arguably America's most famous nonconformist, Thoreau lived at Walden Pond from July 1845 to September 1847, chronicling his experiences there. It was an experiment in living a life unhindered by social trappings and tradition. His work was not widely renowned for years after his death, but later became a staple in modern culture, defining not only what it means to be an American, but what it means to be human. Come see where the idea of marching to the beat of a different drummer originated. Walden is a classic and essential reading.

When I wrote the following pages, or rather the bulk of them, I lived alone, in the woods, a mile from any neighbor, in a house which I had built myself, on the shore of Walden Pond, in Concord, Massachusetts, and earned my living by the labor of my hands only. I lived there two years and two months. At present I am a sojourner in civilized life again. I should not obtrude my affairs so much on the notice of my readers if very particular inquiries had not been made by my townsmen concerning my mode of life, which some would call impertinent, though they do not appear to me at all impertinent, but, considering the circumstances, very natural and pertinent. Some have asked what I got to eat; if I did not feel lonesome; if I was not afraid; and the like. Others have been curious to learn what portion of my income I devoted to charitable purposes; and some, who have large families, how many poor children I maintained. I will therefore ask those of my readers who feel no particular interest in me to pardon me if I undertake to answer some of these questions in this book. In most books, the I, or first person, is omitted; in this it will be retained; that, in respect to egotism, is the main difference. We commonly do not remember that it is, after all, always the first person that is speaking. I should not talk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew as well. Unfortunately, I am confined to this theme by the narrowness of my experience. Moreover, I, on my side, require of every writer, first or last, a simple and sincere account of his own life, and not merely what he has heard of other men's lives; some such account as he would send to his kindred from a distant land; for if he has lived sincerely, it must have been in a distant land to me. Perhaps these pages are more particularly addressed to poor students. As for the rest of my readers, they will accept such portions as apply to them.

Illustrations were created specifically for this edition in 2019 by Lysa Kaliostra. Walden by Henry David Thoreau "Walden, or Life in the Forest" is a widely-known book by American poet and thinker Henry David Thoreau. First published in 1854. This book is literary a record of a kind of social experiment, for which the author spent over two years. On his own. Thoreau decided to isolate himself from society for some time, focusing only on himself and his needs, imbued with the ideas of the liberal philosopher and the Unitarian pastor Ralph Waldo Emerson. He settled in Massachusetts, in his own self-built hut on the banks of the Walden Pond. He got everything he needed to live on his own, spending most of his time gardening, fishing, reading classic literature, swimming and rowing. However, he did not avoid human intercourse, often meeting and talking both with random travelers, and with the owner of the pond - Emerson himself. With his experiment, Thoreau sought to make it clear to the modern society with its cult of material things that it is possible to live well and happily outside of society, satisfying all natural needs with your own work. He contrasted the industrial revolution and the emerging consumer society with freedom from material wealth, privacy, self-sufficiency and closeness to nature. In fact, the Thoreau's book in addition to its undoubtedly amazing literary qualities is also a kind of propaganda of anti-capitalist and romantic-utopian ideas of the XIX century. By the way, it is appropriate to note that the ideas of maximum separation from modern society, in order to be left alone with yourself and with nature, are also quite popular in the 21st century ...
