Excerpt from Helps to a Correct Understanding of Nature on the Basis of Realism The doings and mysteries in nature invite our search. We see that all earthly things are undergoing change; what changes them? We discover that atoms, bodies, earth, worlds are in motion; what moves them? Does matter move itself? or does something not matter move it? Or is there nothing that is not matter, and is matter all that is? What is matter any how, is there any such thing, or are our thoughts of things as solids mere delusions? What do we know about matter, and how do we know? Do we know even that we are, and what we are? What is man, an atom, a monad, an ephemeron, dust, and nothing more? Are all our thoughts baseless imaginings, and all our hopes delusions? Is there no reality, and does man know nothing? These questions are so plainly answered in the common consciousness of the common world that some of the questions themselves seem absurd; but in philosophic science they are questions, the questions of the day, and questions which are often so answered as to leave before us only a negation, a blank, a void. Where shall we go to find answers to these questions, to books? The books of modern science present to us nature in the garb of some hypotheses. A Metaphysics for Scientific Realism

Scientific realism is the view that our best scientific theories give approximately true descriptions of both observable and unobservable aspects of a mind-independent world. Debates between realists and their critics are at the very heart of the philosophy of science. Anjan Chakravartty traces the contemporary evolution of realism by examining the most promising strategies adopted by its proponents in response to the forceful challenges of antirealist sceptics, resulting in a positive proposal for scientific realism today. He examines the core principles of the realist position, and sheds light on topics including the varieties of metaphysical commitment required, and the nature of the conflict between realism and its empiricist rivals. By illuminating the connections between realist interpretations of scientific knowledge and the metaphysical foundations supporting them, his book offers a compelling vision of how realism can provide an internally consistent and coherent account of scientific knowledge.

Realism is one of the core theories within the field of international relations, and it generally posits a state system characterized by anarchy where states act in what they perceive to be their own self interests. It is a controversial theory, and it has many opponents. Yet effective debate among realists and those who identify with other schools of thought has diminished dramatically over time. As Patrick James argues in Realism and International Relations, scholars in the field have become dissatisfied with results from exchanges in words alone. He contends that translation of the vast amount of information in the field into knowledge requires a greater emphasis on communication beyond the use of text. Given the challenges posed by existing and intensifying information overload, he develops a new model that relies on the graphic representation of analytical arguments. As James explains, realist scholarship in the post-World War II era is the natural domain for the application of systemism, a graphic form of expression with straightforward rules for portrayal of analytical arguments, notably cause and effect within theories. Systemism goes beyond prior iterations of systems theory to offer a visualization technique borrowed and adapted from the philosophy of science. Systemist graphics reveal the shortcomings, contributions and potential of realism. These visualizations, which focus on realist theories about war, are intended to bring order out of what critics tend to describe, with some justification, as chaos. In sum, a graphic turn for realism in particular and international relations in general is essential in order to achieve the scientific progress that otherwise is likely to remain elusive. A major theoretical work by an eminent scholar, this will be of interest to all theorists focusing how the international system of states actually functions.
