During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries priests from the Tateyama mountain area (Toyama Prefecture) brought paintings of the mountain, called Tateyama mandara, on campaigns throughout Japan that extolled its merits, drummed up warm-weather pilgrimage, and established venues for selling products and services. The images depict pilgrims, monks, animals, and supernatural beings occupying the mountain's landscape, thought to contain both hell and paradise. The local landscape was thus cast as a universalized portal to the other world and Tateyama preachers positioned themselves at its gateway as indispensable intermediaries to "salvation," a notion that encompassed a wide range of meanings, from enlightenment to temporary escape from hell. Drawing on methodologies from historical, art historical, and religious studies, this book untangles the complex premises and mechanisms operating in these pictorialisations of the mountain's mysteries and furthers our understanding of the rich complexity of pre-modern Japanese religion.

World-class beaches, fragrant frangipani, swaying palms, and hula girls. Most folks think of Hawaii as a vacation destination. Mob-style executions, drug smuggling, and vicious gang warfare are seldom part of the postcard image. Yet, Hawaii was once home to not only Aloha spirit, but also a ruthless, homegrown mafia underworld. From 1960 to 1980, Hawaiian gangsters grew rich off a robust trade in drugs, gambling, and prostitution that followed in the wake of Hawaii’s tourist boom. Thus, by 1980—the year Charles Marsland was elected Honolulu's top prosecutor—the honeymoon island paradise was also plagued by violence, corruption and organized crime. The zeal that Marsland brought to his crusade against the Hawaiian underworld was relentless, self-destructive, and very personal. Five years earlier, Marsland’s son had been gunned down. His efforts to bring his son’s killers to justice—and indeed, eradicate the entire organized criminal element in Hawaii—make for an extraordinary tale that culminates with intense courtroom drama. Hawaii Five-O meets Wiseguy in author Jason Ryan’s vigorously reported chronicle of brazen gangsters, brutal murders, and a father’s quest for vengeance—all set against an unlikely backdrop of seductive tropical beauty.

Jesus said that his burden was light, but it doesn't always feel that way. For example, what does it mean to 'take up your cross'? How figurative is the language Jesus is using? Or, 'Those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples,' What does Jesus mean? Or, 'I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.' Does this mean unless I follow Jesus, I am cut adrift in this world, lost and without hope? But I cannot follow Jesus without being crucified ... Following Jesus does not seem as simple as preachers sometimes suggest. So Pen sets out into the wilderness to look for him. 'I have one big question that almost hurts in my heart,' she says, 'because I care about the answer so much. I want to ask him, "Jesus, what do you think of me?"'
