The Christian theology of N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872) is based on the principle that humankind, created in God's image, has retained a divine spark and that image, which can welcome God's gift of grace and salvation. Human Comes First illustrates this principle through a selction of Grundtvig's articles, teachings, sermons, letters and speeches from half a century of his theological activity. As part of its agenda to digitalise and translate Grundtvig's vast output, the Grundtvig Study Centre at Aarhus University is pleased to publish this third volume in the series 'N.F.S. Grundtvig: Works in English'. Volume 1. The School for Life (2011), contains Grundtvig's major writings on education, and Volume 2. Living Wellsprings (2015) contains a selction of his hymns, songs, and poems. Future volumes will deal with his politics and his philosophy.

The present volume is the first anthology devoted to the Icelandic theologian and religious author Magnús Eiríksson (1806-81), a forgotten contemporary of Søren Kierkegaard in Golden Age Denmark. With his remarkably modern views, thoughts and ideas of society, politics, and religion, Eiríksson has taken on the role of a widely unknown pioneer in various contexts. As early as in his debut book, On Baptists and Infant Baptism (1844), Eiríksson made a name for himself as a devoted advocate of tolerance and freedom of thought and conscience in matters of religion. Although Eiríksson's numerous and multifaceted writings provoked a wide spectrum of reactions by members of the Danish society, the central figures at that time constantly took care to avoid engaging Eiríksson or his ideas in public debate and instead met him with "lofty silence." The present volume aims to end this silence, which has continued after Eiríksson's death, and it marks the beginning of a serious discussion of Eiríksson's works and ideas. The articles featured in this anthology are written by international scholars from different fields. With its strategic organization the collection covers the key topics of Eiríksson's writings and provides insights into his historical-cultural background. Understanding Eiríksson's polemics with his Copenhagen contemporaries - such as Hans Lassen Martensen, Henrik Nicolai Clausen, N.F.S. Grundtvig and Søren Kierkegaard - on some of the main theological issues of the day sheds light on the period as a whole and provides a new perspective on the complex and diverse discussions concerning religion in the Golden Age.

Apart from the impact of his educational ideas on some parts of the Southern hemisphere, most notably India, GrundtvigAes viewpoint on human nature and human society, on the relationship between national and international community, on the inner dynamic which sustains and drives forward the Christian tradition remains remarkably little known outside his own country. In recent years, however this situation has begun to change. GrundtvigAes thought is being more widely studied and discussed in an international perspective. This fascinating and varied collection of essays, mostly European and North American, illustrated this new development. It suggests that in N.F.S Grundtvig we have a 19th century thinker with unexpected relevance to the dilemmas of the new century.

N.F.S. Grundtvig, a chief shaper of Denmark's modern identity and still an active force in Danish social, political and religious life, was an outstanding intellect of the European 19th century. As new-Europe reviews the old traditional cultural canon, reflective of the most dominant nations, interest grows in Grundtvig. The book comprises English translations of an extensive selection of Grundtvig's own retrospect upon events, causes and periods of his life, and of memoirs by contemporaries upon whose lives his impinged. The choice of texts follows closely that of Johansen and Hoirup's Grundtvigs Erindringer og Erindringer om Grundtvig (Copenhagen 1948). Texts are arranged in an approximate chronology of Grundtvig's life. A copious index supplies mini-biographies and other documentation of the period, its personalities, institutions and events. Translator Edward Broadbridge joins forces with Grundtvig scholar Hans Raun Iversen in this biography of the most influential Dane in modern Denmark’s history. Grundtvig (1783-1872) was a pastor, pedagogue, poet, politician, and philosopher all rolled into one. Best known internationally for his concepts of a people’s (folk) high school, of ‘learning for life’ and of ‘lifelong learning’, in Denmark he is equally famous as the nation-builder and champion of ‘the common good’. This comprehensive, illustrated biography is supplemented by 70 letters tracing Grundtvig’s first-hand experiences in surprisingly honest terms, including his love life, his depressions, and his four trips to England. Edward Broadbridge was born in London but has lived most of his life in Denmark, where he has been awarded the Grundtvig Prize for his translations of Grundtvig’s hymns. Copenhagen University theologian Hans Raun Iversen has an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University and has written extensively on Grundtvig.

A notable figure in the cultural and social history of Denmark, Nikolaj Frederik Severin Grundtvig’s (1783-1872) works are still of great interest to us now. Keeping his vivacious ideas and personality intact, A Grundtvig Anthology includes extracts from Grundtvig’s historical, educational, theological, devotional, and poetical works. Each chapter is prefaced by insightful explanatory introductions by leading authorities on Grundtvig’s monumental body of work, along with a comprehensive introduction and further annotations of the texts. Seen in the way he viewed the myths of the North as an expression of the moral values and understanding of life of the Norsemen, as well as the great achievements of his hymn and song writing, joy of life, openness, and freedom are qualities often associated with Grundtvig. By offering selections from across his major works, this anthology succeeds in capturing his spirit in English translation, and his written legacy continues on.
