Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1866: Secretary's Report, No; 1 Gentlemen, - Although the custom of printing a separate Secretary's Report, at the end of Senior year, is of quite recent origin, Mr. Richardson, of '64, being the first to introduce the practice, the obvious advantages of this form of publication over those afforded by any college magazine or paper have led me to follow the example of the two preceding Secretaries. In the first place, the space allotted, in any college paper, to the Senior statistics is so small that many interesting particulars cannot be printed; besides, the paper in which such statistics appear is never published till a week or more after Class Day, when the greater part of the Senior Class, to whom the statistics are of the most value, are away from Cambridge; whilst a separate report, appearing at Commencement, can easily be distributed amongst the Seniors then present, and sent to the few who are absent, - forming, by its small, compact form, a record of the most important facts of the Class in College, more easy and more likely to be kept than a magazine or paper the last page or two of which is devoted to a few meagre statistics.
