Part I introduces the basic "Principles and Methods of Force Measurement" according to a classification into a dozen of force transducers types: resistive, inductive, capacitive, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrodynamic, magnetoelastic, galvanomagnetic (Hall-effect), vibrating wires, (micro)resonators, acoustic and gyroscopic. Two special chapters refer to force balance techniques and to combined methods in force measurement. Part II discusses the "(Strain Gauge) Force Transducers Components", evolving from the classical force transducer to the digital / intelligent one, with the incorporation of three subsystems (sensors, electromechanics and informatics). The elastic element (EE) is the "heart" of the force transducer and basically determines its performance. A 12-type elastic element classification is proposed (stretched / compressed column or tube, bending beam, bending and/or torsion shaft, middle bent bar with fixed ends, shear beam, bending ring, yoke or frame, diaphragm, axial-stressed torus, axisymmetrical and voluminous EE), with emphasis on the optimum location of the strain gauges. The main properties of the associated Wheatstone bridge, best suited for the parametrical transducers, are examined, together with the appropriate electronic circuits for SGFTs. The handbook fills a gap in the field of Force Measurement, both experts and newcomers, no matter of their particular interest, finding a lot of useful and valuable subjects in the area of Force Transducers; in fact, it is the first specialized monograph in this inter- and multidisciplinary field.

Transducers are being used extensively for measurement as well as control instrumentation in virtually all scintific and industrial fields. This is a handbook for their use in automobiles, appliances, alarm systems, and pollution control. This book shows which transducers are available for the various categories of measurements, describes how they operate, and clarifies the differences between transducer types usable for similar measurements.

This well-received and widely adopted text, now in its Second Edition, continues to provide an in-depth analysis of the fundamental principles of Transducers and Instrumentation in a highly accessible style. Professor D.V.S. Murty, who has pioneered the cause of development of Instrumen-tation Engineering in various engineering institutes and universities across the country, compresses his long and rich experience into this volume. He gives a masterly analysis of the principles and characteristics of transducers, common types of industrial sensors and transducers. Besides, he provides a detailed discussion on such topics as signal processing, data display, transmission and telemetry systems, all the while focusing on the latest developments. The text is profusely illustrated with examples and clear-cut diagrams that enhance its value. NEW TO THIS EDITION : To meet the latest syllabi requirements of various universities, three new chapters have been added: CHAPTER 12: Developments in Sensor Technology CHAPTER 13: Sophistication in Instrumentation CHAPTER 14: Process Control Instrumentation Primarily intended as a text for the students pursuing Instrumentation and Control Engineering, this book would also be extremely useful to professional engineers and those working in R&D organisations.

* Useful to engineers in any industry * Extensive references provided throughout * Comprehensive range of topics covered * Written with practical situations in mind A plant engineer is responsible for a wide range of industrial activities, and may workin any industry. The breadth of knowledge required by such professionals is so wide that previous books addressing plant engineering have either been limited to certain subjects or cursory in their treatment of topics. The Plant Engineer's Reference Bookis the first volume to offer complete coverage of subjects of interest to the plant engineer. This reference work provides a primary source of information for the plant engineer. Subjects include selection of a suitable site for a factory and provisionof basic facilities (including boilers, electrical systems, water, HVAC systems, pumping systems and floors and finishes). Detailed chapters deal with basic issues such as lubrication, corrosion, energy conservation, maintenance and materials handling aswell as environmental considerations, insurance matters and financial concerns. The authors chosen to contribute to the book are experts in their various fields. The Editor has experience of a wide range of operations in the UK, other Europeancountries, the USA, and elsewhere in the world. Produced with the backing of the Institution of Plant Engineers, this work is the primary source of information for plant engineers in any industry worldwide.
