Excerpt from Hand-Book of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America for 1890 Rev. William C. Roberts, D. D., LL.D., whose portrait we give in the Hand-book, is the present Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. He is also the President of Lake Forest University, Chicago, Ill. He was born September 23d, 1832, in Cardiganshire, South Wales, and came with his parents to this country in 1849. He graduated from Princeton College in 1855, and from the Theological Seminary in 1858. His first church was the First Presbyterian Wilmington, Del. From thence he was called, in the fall of 1861, to the First Church of Columbus, 0. In 1864 he removed to Eliza beth, N. J and became co-pastor with Rev. Dr. Magie. Two years later he organized the Westminster Church of Elizabeth. After a very successful pastorate of five years in this church, he was elected in 1881 Corresponding Secretary of the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church. After serving in this position with great ability for six years, he was induced by most flattering offers to take charge of the prosperous institution over which he now presides. Excerpt from A Manual of the United Presbyterian Church of North America, 1751-1887 Very Christian should be in sympathy with his church, and so imbued with its spirit that he can feel at home in its work and its worship. Then, and only then, can he em joy that restful feeling which springs from confidence and love. But to obtain this he must know its history and its mission, its faith and its spirit, its work and its workers, and become so identified with it in all its parts as to enjoy the pleasures of its memories and of its hopes. The United Presbyterian Church of North America did not head at a single fountain. Several springs united their tiny rills at different times to form its stream. It is the result of several unions, and its antecedents are therefore more numer ous and fragmentary than that of most churches. This has thrown a veil of obscurity over much of its past history, for while one of its constituent parts was alien to the others, they would take but little interest in each other's history and ministry. The time as well as the occasion for such ignor ance is now happily past. Twenty-three years of peaceful union and healthful growth has so unified and consolidated the church that her sons and daughters should feel a kindly family interest in all her ancestral branches. Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Unfinished Business of the Presbyterian Church in America IT is a good thing for each denomination to seek to determine as clearly as it can its own distinctive duty. Unless it does this it is not in a position to plan its proper courses Of action or to draw out and use the resources of its membership. It is in no presumptuous or vaunting Spirit that the different groups of Christians in our country to-day are seeking thus to ascertain each its own rightful share in the one great task. They are working together in more united and trustful relations than ever before and their work both separately and together will be far more effective by reason Of their sure discernment Of their own respective Obligations. Excerpt from The United Presbyterian Church: A Handbook of Its History and Principles Druidism was abolished. In the persecution under Diocletian, in the beginning of the fourth century, some Christians in the southern part of the island crossed the Border in order to escape the sword, and carried the gospel with them into the more remote regions of the North. By the rupture between the Picts and Scots, in which the Romans had a share, the progress of the evangelization of the country was arrested. But the ex pulsion of the Romans, and the fusion of the races and septs into one nation, favoured the true religion. Excerpt from The Constitution of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America: Containing the Confession of Faith, the Catechisms, and the Directory for the Worship of God In 1792 a committee was appointed to select and arrange the Proof Texts. That committee reported to the Assembly of 1794, and their work was referred to another committee, with directions to compare the proofs with those annexed to the Westminster Confession, Catechisms, and Directory, to revise the whole, and to publish an edition of the Standards with the proofs annexed. In accordance with that order, and further order by the Assembly of 1796, the new book was published in 1797. In 1869 the two bodies claiming the name and rights of the Presbyterian Church in the United States Of America, and which separated in 1837, were reunited on the doctrinal and ecclesiastical basis of our common Standards. The only amendment of the Confession of Faith since 1788 was effected in 1886 - 87 by striking out from Chapter xxiv. Section 4, the clause forbidding marriage with a deceased wife's sister. The Book of Discipline was entirely reconstructed and adopted in 1884-85. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
