Haegue Yang interviewed by Kyla McDonald and Steinar Sekkingstad This catalogue accompanies two parallel solo exhibitions by Haegue Yang held in the fall of 2013: "Journal of Bouba/kiki" at Glasgow Sculpture Studios (October 5-December 20, 2013); and "Journal of Echomimetic Motions" at Bergen Kunsthall (October 18-December 22, 2013). This new collaborative publication, Dare to Count Phonemes and Graphemes, has evolved within the framework of these geographically separate yet collaboratively conceived exhibitions. While each exhibition was an independent manifestation, they both are intrinsically linked to Yang's continuous artistic evolution. The developments shown are emblematic of the artist's recent projects, focusing on the ideas of abstraction and motion. This catalogue presents two newly commissioned texts, as well as an interview between Yang and the respective curators of the exhibitions, which explore the artist's distinctive and diverse work. Hu Fang's Dear Navigator is a collection of ten short stories that reflect on contemporary society, politics, and the human condition. The author takes us on a journey across time and space to hidden realities where we meet culture workers, astronauts, airplanes, Zen masters, and hunger artists. The title story "Dear Navigator" is a collection of letters written during a 520-day simulated space mission to Mars--to test if humans can endure travel from Earth to Mars and back again. "Whale Song" tells the story of XP, a lonely male escort, as he goes on a surreal journey to self-realization, and "The Shame of Participation" tells a tale of two thieving artists who legally steal objects from those living in a city in desperation. When the reality turns into fiction, and the science fiction becomes reality, Hu draws on the experience of everyday life, the past, and the unknown future to create stories of otherworldly melancholy and humor. Hu Fang is a fiction writer and cofounder of Vitamin Creative Space, Guangzhou, and The Pavilion, Beijing. He lives and works in Guangzhou and Beijing. Previously published titles include Troubled Laughter (2012), Garden of Mirrored Flowers (2010), and Pavilion to the Heart's Insight (2008). 'The Emperor of China's Ice' is the title of Jun Yang's contribution to the Austrian Sculpture Park.It is based on a myth according to which, in ancient China, ice blocks were buried in the winter months and then served as ice cream in summer.At the end of November 2018, a 1 m[3] block of ice was buried in an embankment in the Austrian Sculpture Park.The ice will be excavated again at the Sculpture Park's spring festival on May 19, 2019.Yang decided to make a children's book rather than a catalogue to accompany the project.He invited the Japanese children's book illustrator Yuuki Nishimura to illustrate the publication.Published on occasion of 'Jun Yang: The Emperor of China's Ice', 2018/19, Österreichischer Skulpturenpark.Design by Jun Yang, Karin Buol-Wischenau.
