Excerpt from Gustavus Adolphus in Germany, From the German, Vol. 2 It was Sunday afternoon toward the end of January in the year 1630. The stillness of winter reigned on the parks and streets of Stockholm; the fast-falling snowflakes veiled the outlook into the distance and brought a premature twilight, which was felt even in the apartments of the castle, although it occupied an elevated position. In muffled strokes the bells announced four o'clock, here and there in the village houses faint lights already began to glimmer. In the forepart of the castle with its beautiful view of the many cliffs and bays, far out to the breakers of the Baltic sea, we find the boudoir of the queen. Marie Eleanor was born a princess of Brandenburg, and for ten years had been the wife of Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden. Neither convenience nor politics, but genuine love had formed this union, and preserved it pure, sincere and holy, - a good model for the people of all ranks and classes. Excerpt from The History of the Life of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, Sirnamed the Great, Vol. 2 Soon after he invaded Hesse, and having joined himself with Aldringer, Fugger, and Mansfelt, advanced (whilst his majesty invested Marienberg) as far as Fulda, in order to succour the bishop of Wurtzburg, and shelter the electors of Cologn, Mentz and Triers. But in short, this great commander, in the present conjuncture, hardly knew what steps to take: mortified with misfortune, and piqued to the heart upon having made a shipwreck of one half of his glory, he was quite bewildered in his own ideas, having nothing certain to resolve upon, except it was to regain his character by some service of a desperate nature. And this, it is manifest, he ought to have attempted; but the Lorrainers did not join him quite so soon as he wished, and when that junction was formed at Miltenberg, he fell suddenly into a kind of despondence, for he did not like the aspects of his new assistants. Excerpt from Gustavus Adolphus, Vol. 2 of 2: A History of the Art of War From Its Revival After the Middle Ages to the End of the Spanish Succession War, With a Detailed Account of the Campaigns of the Great Swede, and of the Most Famous Campaigns of Turenne, Cond', Eugene, and Marlborough; With 237 Cromwell began his New Model discipline with a troop, of which he was captain. There was nothing new in it; it was but the imitation by a strong, resolute, intelligent man of what another great man and greater captain had done within the generation. Cromwell was broad enough to understand what he and all other Englishmen had watched, the wonder ful campaigns of 1630, 1631 and 1632 in Germany; and wise enough, when the occasion came, to apply the lessons they taught. To assert that his military skill was but a reflection of Gustavus' is no slight to Cromwell, who as a man and a ruler was the equal of the Swede. The book describes and analyses the early modern Swedish army, with a particular emphasis on the reforms introduced by King Gustavus Adolphus before and during the Thirty Years War. Furthermore, the book expands our understanding of the Swedish army during the Thirty Years War by also focusing on its operations on the eastern front, against Russian and Polish opponents, and not only on the better-known operations in Germany against the Catholic League and the Holy Roman Empire. Sweden had a long history of conflict with neighbouring countries, and the reforms introduced by King Gustavus Adolphus had their origin in wars fought in the early seventeenth century, before or in the early phases of the Thirty Years War. The Kalmar war with Denmark, the Novgorod and Pskov campaigns in Russia, the conquest of Livonia, and the war with Poland played important roles in preparing the Swedish army for the wars on the continent from 1630 onwards. While some of the technical and tactical innovations attributed to the Swedish Army in the Thirty Years War are myths, others were real. Possibly of yet more enduring importance were the Swedish Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna's administrative reforms. A conscription system was established which consistently managed to raise troops, despite the small population of Sweden and its territories. A logistics system was introduced which could supply the armies, despite the vast geographical depth of operations. The intelligence service was developed into a comprehensive support establishment to military operations. It is fair to say that the Swedish army that entered the Thirty Years War and the organisation that enabled it formed the foundation for the subsequent Swedish rise to regional great power status. While the army of Gustavus Adolphus has been described elsewhere, the book includes current research that has not yet appeared in the English language. It also, unlike most previous works, explains how the Swedish experiences on the eastern front influenced Gustavus Adolphus and his views on how to build a modern army that could challenge the established great powers on the continent.
