This book focuses on the phenomenon of a ‘21st century curriculum’ and its role in preparing students for work and life in a rapidly changing global knowledge society. Its context is the global and diverse national influences on education policy agendas. The central concepts in the academic literature that underpins the phenomenon are globalisation, curriculum, and policy. The analysis spans global influences on the development of ‘21st century curriculum’ policy, the construction of such policy at the national and State levels in Australia, and the enactment of such policy in three select case-study schools and in relation to which both similarities and differences are identified. The global to local span and the international relevance of the exposition are both revisited to highlight major findings, to discuss them in relation to recent literature and to offer propositions about ‘21st century curriculum’ development that are of wide interest and relevance. Recommendations for policy and practice as well as possible future directions for research in the field follow.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: A, Kenyatta University, language: English, abstract: Curriculum is one of the most important elements of education system. A curriculum is essential in planning the education process and procedures such as terms, sessions and lesion periods over a given period of time. In general, a curriculum encompasses a continuous chain of activities required to translate the goals of an education system into specific activities, materials and observable behavior changes. In other words, curriculum is a set of interrelated plans and experiences that students must complete under the guidance of the school or early childhood settings. Some studies defined a curriculum as the sum of all student experiences within the education process. In this regard, curriculum consists of the interaction between students and the instructional content, materials, resources and processes in a manner that can assist in evaluation of education goals. In most cases, curricula are standardized and incorporate high level of autonomy of the learner and instructor. Most countries around the world including Australia have a curriculum that is used to act as a guide in primary and secondary education. Specifically, Australian curriculum can be described as a national curriculum used by all primary and secondary schools to realise progressive development, review and implementation of education activities and processes in Australia. Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is an independent body tasked with the development and review of the Australian curriculum. Currently, states and territories of Australia are engaged in implementation of various aspects of Foundation to Year 10 part of the curriculum. The curriculum contains expected performance outcomes and content for all Australian teachers and students. It also provides various strategies and tactics that can assist in delivering the objectives of education as well as behavioral changes which are necessary in acceleration of student learning. However, effective implementation of the curriculum can face numerous opportunities and challenges which significantly impact on the expected outcomes.

The Australian Language Levels (ALL) Project, begun in 1985 to develop an organizational framework and curriculum guidelines for language instruction in elementary and secondary education, offers a coherent model for curriculum design drawing on recent research on teaching and learning. The first volume in the four-volume series outlines the current context of language teaching and learning in Australia. It contains: an overview of the ALL guidelines; discussion of the values of language learning both for the individual and as a national resource; a summary of the ALL Project; a brief discussion of the need for language curriculum renewal; a description of the school language learning context in Australia, including student characteristics, common program types, the range of languages taught, and conditions promoting school language learning; a review of developments in approaches to language teaching and learning, from classical humanism through reconstructionism and progressivism to the balanced approach of the ALL Project; eight principles to guide the teaching and learning process; discussion of the goals of language learning, including their development, broad categories, and integration in the curriculum; and the framework of progressive, interlocking, and age-related instructional stages proposed by the ALL Project. Australia's Curriculum Dilemmas tells the story of Australia's recent attempts to come to grips with the big challenges of curriculum and sets up the background to understanding the debates that continue to surface as we move for the first time towards a national approach. Detailing some of the inside stories and arguments of the last 30 years about what schools should do, as well as some of the politics and lessons that have been learnt along the way, it brings together accounts from a national research project and reflections from people who have been actively involved in developing curriculum policies for each state. Expert contributors examine the challenges of the public management of curriculum, drawing on the different experiences of curriculum reforms in different states. They take up the problems of framing vocational and academic education for the new century and of confronting equity and diversity issues. They show the fundamental differences that exist in Australia regarding the impact of examinations and assessment, and the very different policy approaches that have been taken to tackle these issues. Many people in this country are unaware of how much their experience of education has been formed by the particular values of the state in which they were educated. For the first time, this book demonstrates the effects of those differences, now and into the future.
