This is an anthology of stories, poems, and artwork by people born with congenital heart defects (CHDs). These authors share their stories of hope on several themes. This volume includes the following themes: Growing Up with Congenital Heart Defects, How My CHD Defines Me, Being Active with CHD, and CHDs Around the Globe. Since CHDs are the #1 birth defect around the world, people across the globe are living with birth defects that could literally end their lives in a heartbeat. What does it mean to live with tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries, hypoplastic left (or right) heart syndrome, single ventricle, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, or a Fontan heart? How does having a CHD affect your ability to become a mother? Since most of the authors in this book were born with complex congenital heart defects and have at least one open-heart surgery, they have a unique connection with one another. The way the authors describe their experiences is eerily similar, despite having been born in different decades, in different locations, and receiving treatment at various hospitals across the globe. The commonality is their heart defect and their relationship with their own mortality. This book is co-edited by Anna Jaworski, the mother of an adult child with a critical congenital heart defect, and Megan Tones, a heart warrior--a term we reserve for people born with a CHD. Together, they have edited stories of strength and resilience, hope and despair, and success and triumph. Besides being an editor, Megan Tones is a contributor to the book. Her contributions show her capacity for understanding what other authors have shared. Many of the authors have shared stories of the trauma they have endured in living with a chronic, life-threatening condition. These stories are sure to bring comfort and hope to members of the congenital heart defect community.

The Story of Micah, journeys through the life of a boy born with Down syndrome and a life threatening heart defect. Nonetheless, he is able to bring love and hope to a world where many still believe, "If it's broken, throw it away." The mother, who never imagined she would be the one to birth a child with an unexpected outcome, explores the uncertainties of what lay ahead on this unfamiliar road. Micah's body is frail from battling illness throughout the first year of life, causing hope to seem unreachable, as chances for survival wane! Despair attempts to become this mother's companion, putting faith to the ultimate test. However, hope whispers to persevere. Would she direct her gaze toward the crashing waves, or resolve to move forward toward faith? This tiny boy helps his mother realize, she did not have to be "the perfect mother;" she just needed to persevere, put God first, and do her best! God's plan all along, was to dismantle expectations of human perfection, replacing it with God's love. Through life's battles, Micah becomes a champion, overcoming challenges of life with a steady determination, teaching us to believe the impossible. His life urges us, not to hold back, knock down restrictive walls and rise above the circumstances. Micah's extraordinary gift to us has been a life worth living!

Why isn't life everything we expected it to be? And why doesn't our faith resolve our frustrations and problems? Kevin Myers, the founding pastor of 12Stone Church, a congregation of more than 30,000 active attenders near Atlanta, believes the reason we don't experience a transformed life is that we fail to grow up spiritually. We focus on developing physically, intellectually, emotionally, and financially, yet our faith remains immature and anemic. In this powerful new book, Myers offers a deep yet simple roadmap to a grown-up faith through understanding the whole context of the Bible, developing spiritual intimacy with God, and gratefully embracing holy obedience. As you understand the Bible and the big picture of God's story with humanity, you begin to find answers to life's most compelling questions. As you begin to understand God more, your longing and ability to experience spiritual intimacy with him increases, as does your desire to obey what God asks of you and your ability to follow through. This is the way to the bigger life, a life even better than you expected--or even dreamed possible.

Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.
