Little Grey Rabbit lives with Squirrel and Hare in a little house on the edge of a wood. It's going to be Grey Rabbit's birthday on Midsummer Day, and Squirrel and Hare are planning a wonderful surprise for her. They've invited all their woodland friends to a birthday party, and are making a birthday cake, all by themselves! But they are keeping it a secret from poor Grey Rabbit, who feels very left out. Down in the dell, behind a curtain of foxgloves, lives a family of crafty weasels. They steal from all the little animals as they walk by; Speckledy Hen's eggs, Moldy Warp's axe... One day, as Little Grey Rabbit bravely hurries past the weasels' haunt, they jump out and snatch her away.
