All the ballads have been recited by many reciters in many places to audiences of many types, the cultured and the uncultured; and through her private experience of their reception the Author has been led to the venture of trying to make them more widely known through her private experience also of their successful and un successful recitation she ventures upon a preface of counsel to those fellow-reciters who desire honestly to teach, to help, rather than merely to amuse. As the title implies, these ballads were written originally for the Gordon League, the society founded in memory of the great soldier-martyr soon after the tragedy at Khartoum.
