The novel spans the years from early Mormonism in nineteenth-century Nauvoo, Illinois, to the 1960s, chronicling changes in moral values. Louisa, a fictional plural wife of Joseph Smith, matures through the hardships of the founding years and treks to Utah. Chris, Louisas great-granddaughter, caught up in the turmoil of the 1960s, researches her ancestry in New York. She rejects Mormonism, enters a polygamous marriage, and contends with opposition and murder. The novel explores the hostility against Mormons, and their conflicted mixture of piety and lust. In its chronological and geographical sweep, the plot moves from coast to coast. The Vander Heides have extensive firsthand experience with their subject matter. Ralph, a former Mormon, holds a PhD in Germanic and Hispanic studies and has taught in colleges and high schools. He studied writing under Brewster Ghiselin at the University of Utah. Judy earned both BA and MA degrees. She studied writing with Wallace Stegner at Stanford University. Judy has worked as a history and English teacher in high schools and as a guidance counselor. The couple has lived in the regions covered in the novel, and they are now both retired. Judy plays tennis. Ralph skis and runs. Together they travel and do volunteer work in the arts and humanities, but advise against spouses jointly writing a novel. They continue to consult each other but write separately.

The debut of the Emma Lord murder mystery series. After a year as publisher-editor of the Alpine Advocate, Emma Lord feels fine about her move to this small town in the foothills of Washington's Cascade Mountains. What she really needs for her paper, though, is a big story. And she gets it--when handsome Mark Doukas, grandson of rich, old Neeny Doukas is murdered. Emma discovers that trying to get straight answers out of Neeny and his thin-lipped son is like poking a nest of sleeping rattlesnakes. What begins with an innocent story about the murdered man, ends with Emma conducting the most interesting, and probably the last, interview of her career from the wrong end of a .38....

Some gifts are meant to be shared... At first he tried to run. Then he made a stand. But no matter how many genetically-engineered monsters John Sullivan puts down, there always seems to be more where they came from. The conspiracy eroding the New Global Republic goes both higher and deeper than anyone ever imagined, and the fractious nature of the players has accelerated the timetable for global civil war beyond anyone's ability to stop it. John Sullivan is used to impossible odds, and his pugnacious nature leaves him no choice but to fight till the very end. Winning may not be possible, but you can always make the other guy bleed. Sometimes that's enough. Abilities that have never brought Sullivan anything but pain and misery are all that stand between a bright future in the hands of one special child and an endless reign of terror under yet another fascist hegemony. Can one man hope to defeat such odds? Perhaps not. But what about a uniquely gifted fighter, a terrible goddess, a giant, and a nine-year-old genius? Maybe there is a chance after all...
