2014 Lannan Foundation Cultural Freedom Notable Book Award In Goliath, New York Times bestselling author Max Blumenthal takes us on a journey through the badlands and high roads of Israel-Palestine, painting a startling portrait of Israeli society under the siege of increasingly authoritarian politics as the occupation of the Palestinians deepens. Beginning with the national elections carried out during Israel's war on Gaza in 2008-09, which brought into power the country's most right-wing government to date, Blumenthal tells the story of Israel in the wake of the collapse of the Oslo peace process. As Blumenthal reveals, Israel has become a country where right-wing leaders like Avigdor Lieberman and Bibi Netanyahu are sacrificing democracy on the altar of their power politics; where the loyal opposition largely and passively stands aside and watches the organized assault on civil liberties; where state-funded Orthodox rabbis publish books that provide instructions on how and when to kill Gentiles; where half of Jewish youth declare their refusal to sit in a classroom with an Arab; and where mob violence targets Palestinians and African asylum seekers scapegoated by leading government officials as "demographic threats." Immersing himself like few other journalists inside the world of hardline political leaders and movements, Blumenthal interviews the demagogues and divas in their homes, in the Knesset, and in the watering holes where their young acolytes hang out, and speaks with those political leaders behind the organized assault on civil liberties. As his journey deepens, he painstakingly reports on the occupied Palestinians challenging schemes of demographic separation through unarmed protest. He talks at length to the leaders and youth of Palestinian society inside Israel now targeted by security service dragnets and legislation suppressing their speech, and provides in-depth reporting on the small band of Jewish Israeli dissidents who have shaken off a conformist mindset that permeates the media, schools, and the military. Through his far-ranging travels, Blumenthal illuminates the present by uncovering the ghosts of the past -- the histories of Palestinian neighborhoods and villages now gone and forgotten; how that history has set the stage for the current crisis of Israeli society; and how the Holocaust has been turned into justification for occupation. A brave and unflinching account of the real facts on the ground, Goliath is an unprecedented and compelling work of journalism.

Since the 2011 release of Goliath, Tom Gauld has solidified himself as one of the world’s most revered and critically-acclaimed cartoonists working today. From his weekly strips in the Guardian and New Scientist, to his lauded graphic novels You're All Just Jealous of My Jetpack and Mooncop, Gauld’s fascination with the intersection between history, literary criticism, and pop culture has become the crux of his work. Now in paperback, with a new cover and smaller size, Goliath is a retelling of the classic myth, this time from Goliath's side of the Valley of Elah. Goliath of Gath isn't much of a fighter. He would pick admin work over patrolling in a heartbeat, to say nothing of his distaste for engaging in combat. Nonetheless, at the behest of the king, he finds himself issuing a twice-daily challenge to the Israelites: "Choose a man. Let him come to me that we may fight." Quiet moments in Goliath's life as an isolated soldier are accentuated by Gauld's trademark drawing style: minimalist scenery, geometric humans, and densely crosshatched detail. Simultaneously tragic and bleakly funny, Goliath displays a sensitive wit and a bold line--a traditional narrative reworked, remade, and revolutionized into a classic tale of Gauld’s very own.

The Bible mentions giants, most notably the giant Goliath. Giants put fear in the hearts and minds of most of the Hebrew populace. Goliath kept Saul's army frozen in fear; they were unable to fulfill their purpose as soldiers. Goliath never did anything, and yet he was an effective deterrent. The story of David versus Goliath was battle of flesh and blood. There is a deeper meaning to Goliath and the giants in the promised land, and it has to do with fears, insecurities, and anxieties that lie deep within each one of us. In fact, those fears are so deep within us that David describes them as "secret faults" that are in the "hidden part." These fears exist and greatly affect each person, but they are so well guarded that one is not even aware of their existence. These are the giants that keep one from having the faith to go down into the valley and fight the battles of life. Even the apostle Paul acknowledged the profound influence of these giants and could only proclaim, "Oh, wretched man that I am." The truth that will set one free is when one comes to the realization that they need Christ to help foster an awareness of the existence of those inner fears. David noted that God desires that one will find "truth in the inward parts." The battles in life are not carnal, "for we do not wrestle against flesh and blood" but against the giants in the depths of one's own spirit. Human nature urges people to concentrate on external phenomena when the real giants that impede prosperity, potentiality, peace, faith, and love are internal phenomena. Each one only needs to find their own personal Goliaths that lie within.

There were six knife-carrying bullies in our community during my teen years that kept us farm boys living in fear that they might engrave their initials on our skin. Until one day, my mouth overtook my brain, and I challenged them to clean up or clear out. What I thought was a deadly mistake turned out to be a blessing. I cleaned the plow of all six of these brothers by taking down their big cousin that I called Goliath. I became known as the giant killer, the one that cleaned the plow of seven all at one time all by myself. Our trials should be kept as treasuries for strength for another day, another battle, as did David when facing Goliath. The clouds that appear in our lives are Gods way of creating a dark background for grace to paint a new picture of our life. Contributing authors Mike and Vickie Oliver tell about their dark experience as parents of a prodigal, as their youngest daughter ran away from home with an illegal immigrant and was without news of her for seven months, until the master artist took the brush of grace and painted a picture of hope, and their nightmare of harrow turned into a blessing that would benefit many. Trials are not pleasant to our flesh or spirit; however, if we can glean and draw strength from them, somewhere in our future we can use them as arrows in our quiver to thwart the progress of defeat. I never imagined fifty-years later my experience as a teen would become a part my book series, Goliath Awaits.

"In this ambitious novel, dense with perspectives and social commentary, Onyebuchi dreams up disparate lives in a crumbling future America—with gentrifiers returning to Earth from space colonies and laborers trying to make a precarious living—while leaving room for moments of beauty and humor."—The New York Times, Editors' Choice In his adult novel debut, Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and NAACP Image Award finalist and ALA Alex and New England Book Award winner Tochi Onyebuchi delivers a sweeping science fiction epic in the vein of Samuel R. Delany and Station Eleven. In the 2050s, Earth has begun to empty. Those with the means and the privilege have departed the great cities of the United States for the more comfortable confines of space colonies. Those left behind salvage what they can from the collapsing infrastructure. As they eke out an existence, their neighborhoods are being cannibalized. Brick by brick, their houses are sent to the colonies, what was once a home now a quaint reminder for the colonists of the world that they wrecked. A primal biblical epic flung into the future, Goliath weaves together disparate narratives—a space-dweller looking at New Haven, Connecticut as a chance to reconnect with his spiraling lover; a group of laborers attempting to renew the promises of Earth’s crumbling cities; a journalist attempting to capture the violence of the streets; a marshal trying to solve a kidnapping—into a richly urgent mosaic about race, class, gentrification, and who is allowed to be the hero of any history. 'The Book of David' trilogy is the bible's missing volume, a story of love and hate, political chicanery and religious rivalry, the beginnings of nationhood and the men and women whose lives were caught up in its strife. History is written by the winners, we are told -- but what if it wasn't? 'The Book of David' tells the story of the beginnings of the nation of Israel through the eyes of three men who were in their different ways the 'losers' of history - Goliath, whom David slew, Saul, his predecessor as king and Joab, his army general. 'Goliath' is the opening volume, telling the story of the Philistine champion's life and loves up to his fateful encounter with David. The Philistine side of the story has never been told before... Terence Morgan (author of 'The Master of Bruges', 'The Shadow Prince' and 'Villon') is renowned for his 'retakes' of history, looking at events from a fresh and different perspective. 'The Book of David' is a worthy addition to the canon.
