In this unique and highly entertaining autobiography, Alf Taylor chronicles his life growing up in the infamous New Norcia Mission, north of Perth in the fifties and sixties. At once darkly humorous and achingly tragic, God, The Devil and Me tells of the life and desperation of the young children forced into the care of the Spanish Nuns and Brothers who ran the Mission. Their lives made up of varying degrees of cruelty and punishments, these children were the 'little black devils' that God and religion forgot. Written with an acerbic and brutal wit, Alf intersperses dark childhood memories with a Monty Pythonesque retelling of the Bible, in which Peter is an alcoholic and Judas is a good guy.As a child, underfed, poorly clothed and missing his family, Alf sought refuge in the library in the company of Shakespeare and Michelangelo. He writes with joy about the camaraderie of the boys, their love of sport and their own company, but also notes that many descended into despair upon leaving. Most died early. Alf Taylor is one of the 'lucky ones'.'At once horrific and hilarious, this ''little black devil'' has created a work unique not just in Aboriginal writing, but in Australian literature altogether.' - Dennis Haskell, Australian poet, critic and academic

A chronicle of lived experience, this astonishing book is a biographical exposé, its ultimate theme the great battle of the last days, the final war between God and the Devil. Drawing on her journals, Valerie tells how, at the height of a successful career as writer and actress, she suddenly disappeared. An innocent seeker of God, unaware of the pitfalls, or the unrelenting opposition of the devil, Valerie had strayed into an Indian sect where its female guru, learning of her vocation to ‘write a book for God’, feared her as a potential whistleblower. Vowing to 'stop Valerie writing', she attacks her with magic and occult powers. Now, the writing of the book itself becomes the battlefield. Converted to Catholicism and escaped to France, Valerie is helped by an exorcist. And God, giving her the added vocation to pray for souls lost in sects, comes to her in the Eucharist, fighting alongside, granting moments lifted into bliss and finally breaking the bondage. Thirty years on, the past erased, experience with Valerie the inside story.

I have written this book that it may be an inspiration to change not only prisoners of the world but our government and all the people of the world that they may consider Gods way and not their own ways to survive in this world. God has given this country the best of all blessings. We have never had a war with another country on our own native soil. We have been blessed with riches and freedom abundantly because we started this country by putting God first in all things. But our government has turned its back on Gods ways and if not corrected, God will surely lay his wrath against this country and many will suffer and many will die if we dont begin to live the last days according to his word and by his laws which are written in his Holy Bible. I have been inspired by God to write this that millions of souls from Nation to Nation shall be saved. That many may take heed to put on the whole armor of God, to prepare for a spiritual warfare. As all the revelations are coming to past before our very eyes, I hope this will help save our cultures, bring back tradition and ethic norms and values into our American Society. I want to give thanks to God, AAA, NA and my sister, Sandra Wright, for helping and inspiring me to finish this four year task and to continue Gods work to bring the true believers together for God and help break the many cycles that are causing our sociological structure to self destruct. From a child, I was told some day that I would be special or do something for Gods will being the 7th son and the 7th child. They said I was Holy. In this book, I will tell you all the good and bad things which I saw in my life time and experiences with the natural and the super natural and the spiritual warfare that exist between life and death and the good and the evil which is real in all our lives today. This book, no matter how hypocritical it may seem, is based on true stories of my own self experiences that it may help some people whos having the same problems come forth for testimony so the unbelievers will become believers in Christ Jesus and to learn that Satan and his demons are real.

From prizewinning journalist and Brazilian native Juliana Barbassa comes a deeply reported and beautifully written account of the seductive and chaotic city of Rio de Janeiro as it struggles with poverty and corruption on the brink of the 2016 Olympic Games. Juliana Barbassa moved a great deal throughout her life, but Rio was always home. After twenty-one years abroad, she returned to find her native city—once ravaged by inflation, drug wars, corrupt leaders, and dying neighborhoods—undergoing a major change. Rio has always aspired to the pantheon of global capitals, and under the spotlight of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games it seems that its moment has come. But in order to prepare itself for the world stage, Rio must vanquish the entrenched problems that Barbassa recalls from her childhood. Turning this beautiful but deeply flawed place into a pristine showcase of the best that Brazil has to offer in just a few years is a tall order—and with the whole world watching, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Library Journal called Dancing with the Devil in the City of God “akin to Charlie LeDuff’s Detroit”—a book that “combines history and personal interviews in an informative and engaging work.” This kaleidoscopic portrait of Rio introduces the reader to the people who make up this city of extremes, revealing their aspirations and their grit, their violence, their hungers, and their splendor, and shedding light on the future of this city they are building together. Dancing with the Devil in the City of God is an insider perspective from a native daughter and “a fascinating look at the people who live in and aspire to change one of the world’s most impressive cities” (Booklist, starred review).

However, the real story that is revealed here is how he survived all the horrors and devastating setbacks that came with the world he lived in. Anyone who has ever been involved in the drug culture and addiction, or cares about someone who is, will find Howard?s story meaningful on a multitude of levels. Furthermore, Fate, both good and bad, will always play a crucial part in one?s life. A person?s spirituality is what makes the difference when it comes to acquiring sufficient knowledge and wisdom for climbing out of the darkness and moving towards a peaceful existence. The lessons that Howard?s story imparts tell us that it is not too late to begin the journey. The lessons of Howard?s life apply equally to everyone, regardless of the challenges you face.
