“A searing and emotionally gripping account of a young black girl growing up to become a strong black woman during the most difficult time of racial segregation.”—Professor Charles Ogletree, Harvard Law School “Provides important context for an important moment in America’s history.”—Associated Press When fourteen-year-old Carlotta Walls walked up the stairs of Little Rock Central High School on September 25, 1957, she and eight other black students only wanted to make it to class. But the journey of the “Little Rock Nine,” as they came to be known, would lead the nation on an even longer and much more turbulent path, one that would challenge prevailing attitudes, break down barriers, and forever change the landscape of America. For Carlotta and the eight other children, simply getting through the door of this admired academic institution involved angry mobs, racist elected officials, and intervention by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was forced to send in the 101st Airborne to escort the Nine into the building. But entry was simply the first of many trials. Breaking her silence at last and sharing her story for the first time, Carlotta Walls has written an engrossing memoir that is a testament not only to the power of a single person to make a difference but also to the sacrifices made by families and communities that found themselves a part of history.

This book is about vision. More precisely, it is about helping a congregation capture a pastor's vision and struggling through the process of seeing that vision fulfilled. H. Beecher Hicks captures that experience through the image of the Old Testament tabernacle---God's spiritual instrument for leading Moses and the Israelites through their wilderness journey and manifesting his glorious presence among them. This book arises out of Dr. Hicks's experiences in recent years of coping with the need of his church for a larger facility in the face of opposition from the community surrounding the church. The book captures and expounds the spiritual qualities required for such changing times. It both teaches and inspires. It shows us how to deal with the ups and downs of defining a vision, confronting change, and dealing with the obstacles that stand in the way, from both inside and outside the church. 'The problem with visions,' Dr. Hicks writes, 'is that they don't come with 'how to' manuals or an 800 number to call for technical support.' Yet God shows his faithfulness in many ways, sometimes after grit and grimy work, sometimes through unexplainable miracles.

To whom it may concern, my name is Stanley Granson and I have b een a Christian all of my life, I was baptize at a early age of five years old. I was raised in a Christian family and attended church on a regular basis. My dad Joe Dell Granson Sr. who has gone on to be with the Lord was my spiritual leader in my life. I have love for the bible and sharing Gods word with his people. Although shy by nature I found a new boldness in ministering to the loss. God has brought me from a mighty long way. I believe that the word of God should be taught to all generations because God is trying to reach everyone through different methods and ways. It is very important to understand that we are not perfect, but the Lord is perfecting us. However, if and when we make a mistake in life, we have the privilege of going before God the Father to confess our faults to him. I have trusted God to provide for my every need. I know this can only happen through faith. The bible says all have sin and come short of the glory of God. But He is faithful to forgive us from all wrong doing if only we confess and repent of our sins. If you know Jesus you can and will be saved. Jesus declares the only way to the father is through Him. Without Jesus there is no salvation. I believe our goal in life should be to reach and teach the word of God so our families can stay strong and our marriages or strengthen. I thank God for a Godly father and mother who taught me to stay on the right path. We have to teach this generation the same thing if we are going to conquer saving the lost. I am excited about the opportunity to attend Grace Theological. I believe the best is yet to come.

Just when you think that Jesus is not there or just doesn't hear your prayers; he is & he does! Just like was, is, and always will be on my side and there for me. Just when you think he's not watching or doesn't care; he is & does! God Be To Glory! Just when you think that he has let you down or made you frown; he ultimately is not the one, so don't blame God or be mad at him. Behind every cloudy storm that passes in your life, there is a silver lining because the Lord is just that surreal! God is omnipresence, so Greater is he (Jesus) that's in me, than he (Satan) that's in the world! This is the Day that the Lord has made, so let us rejoice and be glad in it. Bless me indeed Lord; Amen and Thank You Father! Let my past failures help you to overcome your tribulations so that you too can receive the blessings that God has waiting for you. As a matter of fact, ask the Lord to help you to be obedient so that his blessings may fall down upon you. Go ahead and walk on through your fears because it's time that you stop letting the devil beat you down; but rather, it's time to beat him back and beat him down forever by taking back everything he has stolen from you, such as your joy, health, hurt, loss, emptiness, loneliness, faith, love etc. You don't have to cry anymore unless it's tears of joy because I can take you to my dearest and nearest friend (Jesus) indeed; you can trust him to be your bridge to safety in any kind of troubling waters. Womanist Midrash is an in-depth and creative exploration of the well- and lesser-known women of the Hebrew Scriptures. Using her own translations, Gafney offers a midrashic interpretation of the biblical text that is rooted in the African American preaching tradition to tell the stories of a variety of female characters, many of whom are often overlooked and nameless. Gafney employs a solid understanding of womanist and feminist approaches to biblical interpretation and the sociohistorical culture of the ancient Near East. This unique and imaginative work is grounded in serious scholarship and will expand conversations about feminist and womanist biblical interpretation.

The Lord Himself is continually blessing me right here as well as right now. And I’ve said it once, and will now say it faithfully and once more again. That without a touching; and a compelling healing story, one wouldn’t be able to tell others of the Grace, and the Goodness of God’s Ultimate and Testimonial Glory.

Let It Shine! probes the distinctive contribution of black Catholics to the life of the American church, and to the unfolding of lived Christianity in the United States. This important book explores the powerful spiritual renaissance that has marked African American life and selfunderstanding over the last several decades by examining one critical dimension: the forging of new expressions of Catholic worship rooted in the larger Catholic tradition, yet shaped in unique ways by African American religious culture. Starting with the 1960s, the book traces the dynamic interplay of social change, cultural awakening, and charismatic leadership that have sparked the emergence of distinctive styles of black Catholic worship. In their historical overview, McGann and Eva Marie Lumas chronicle the liturgical and pastoral issues of a black Catholic liturgical movement that has transformed the larger American church. McGann then examines the foundational vision of Rev. Clarence R. J. Rivers, who promoted forms of black worship, music, preaching, and prayer that have enabled African American Catholics to reclaim the fullness of their religious identity. Finally, Harbor constructs a black Catholic aesthetic based on the theological, ethical, and liturgical insights of four African American scholars, expressed through twenty-three performative values. This liturgical aesthetic illuminates the distinctive gift of black Catholics to the multicultural tapestry of lived faith in the American church and can also serve as a pastoral model for other cultural communities. Blending history, theology, and liturgy, Let It Shine! is a valuable resource for scholars, teachers, and students and a practical pastoral guide to bringing African American spirituality more firmly into the sacramental life of American parishes.
