There was a time when the Earth had three moons, and when the seductive sorceress Avalona could alter futures and bend "happentracks" with her spells. Indeed, in this vast chaotic universe called the Greataway, with its many imaginable futures, anything is possible. Especially when Nyneve, Avalona's bewitching human disciple, conjures up the complete legend of Camelot and when the roguish gnome Fang, slayer of the dread daggertooth, stumbles into the human happentrack, causing human and gnome worlds to overlap. For then the moons begin to disappear one by one, and Fang, Nyneve, and all their comrades find themselves caught in a happentrack from which there is no escape, a happentrack in which the legend of Arthur might prove their only salvation...

Beautiful yet strange this night was. Often, when I could not sleep, I would get up, go outside into the fresh air and ponder the gazillion stars overhead. I think most people's imagination comes alive when one walks in the dark. As I meandered slowly through the forest, something distracted the corner of my eye. I saw what looked to be a very small person just ahead of me. I quickly followed this little being but could not keep up. Startling me, he suddenly jumped smack dab in my path. My heart raced considerably, for I had never seen any living thing that looked quite like him. The little fellow standing in front of me smiled, extended his rather large hand and said, "Hi John. I'm Moffee, Moffee Vicket." An unusual name, I thought. But the question was how did he know my name? At times when I looked at Moffee, it seemed as though he was taller or shorter than at other times; but always proportionate for the situation. He was very pudgy and had a comforting and disarming countenance about him. Even though I didn't speak my thoughts out loud, Moffee turned toward me and said, "Gnomes are supposed to be pudgy." And he laughed. After very little conversation, one could tell he was quite serious about the enjoyment of life. Moffee bid me to walk with him, and so my life changing story began.

In the spring of 1954, when her father announces that the family has a chance to immigrate to Canada, Theresa's life changes forever. She and her family are wartime refugees from Yugoslavia, so it shouldn't be hard to leave Austria. But the weathered barracks of Lager Lichtenstein are the only home she knows, and they are filled with family and friends she doesn't want to leave behind. As she says her good-byes, Theresa's friend Martin gives her two gifts: a package of postcards and a stone he calls the Gnome's Eye, which he says will "protect her from all things evil, living or dead." Theresa is convinced the stone has no power, but she still keeps it close as they travel on the crowded immigrant ship and when they settle into a rooming house on Kensington Avenue in Toronto. At first Theresa is afraid of everything: the other tenants in the rooming house, the rat that lives in the kitchen, learning a new language. But as time goes by, Theresa's need for the Gnome's Eye fades, until she is finally able to give it to someone who needs it more than she does.

His review has got to be 'in' by mid-day tomorrow ... at about 9 pm his mind will grow relatively clear, and until the small hours he will sit ... skipping expertly through one book after another and laying each one down with the comment, 'God, what tripe!' ... Then suddenly he will snap into it. All the stale old phrases--'a book that no one should miss', 'something memorable on every page'--jump into their places like iron filings obeying the magnet. Thus did George Orwell, writing forty years ago in Confessions of a Book Reviewer, describe the labours of a typical literary hack. Precious little has changed over the intervening decades; the servility of the satirical magazine Private Eye. Lord Gnome's Literary Companion assembles, in thematic order, the best of these columns to present an astringent, rude and funny survey of publishers and the published.

In "Nothing Happens Here," Veronica Tracey, a resourceful former spy turned PI, uses her uncanny ability to track down the most elusive targets, taking readers on a thrilling ride. “I’m looking for a private investigator. I have lost something.” Not someone? “My speciality is people and I’ve been known to find the occasional lost dog.” “How about garden ornaments?” “Pardon?” I could feel a frown puckering the skin on my forehead and worked hard to dislodge it. “I’ve lost some garden ornaments.” “That’s not something I’ve ever been asked to find before. What type of ornaments?” “Gnomes,” he said with a straight face. “Gnomes? Are you serious?” Veronica Tracy PI has quite a bit on her plate, on any given day: her 94-year-old Nana and the Cronies of Doom, her cousin and his interesting love life, a retired greyhound, a new and successful private investigation company, and a crazy person following her. She juggles life with a sense of humour and the enduring knowledge that everything is temporary. This book is written in New Zealand English and set in Upper Hutt, New Zealand.
