Excerpt from Bulbs for Spring Planting: Dahlias, Gladioli, Cannas, Iris, Phlox, Lilies, Peonies, and Perennial Plants For those planting Dahlias for the first time this Spring a word as to the culture 18 added With the hope of insuring the joy of success. The soil need not be very rich, a sandy or gravelly $011 suits them best, as any good garden soil. It should be well prepared, to a good depth. Do not manure very heavily as it will develop the growth of foliage instead of flowers. Plant the tubers about two and one-half feet apart and cover with four to six inches of earth. They may be planted after the frost is over, late May or early June. When the buds appear, in late August, is a good time to give them a tonic to develop the bloom. A tablespoonful of nitrate of soda spread about the base of the plant will be a wonderful tonic. After frost in the Fall dig the tubers very carefully, be sure not to break the neck. Store in a dry, cool cellar for the Winter. Divide the roots to one eye before planting in the Spring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Rare and Choice Irises, Peonies, Gladioli, Dahlias: Continuous Bloom in the Garden Few people realize the remarkable development and improvement that has been made m recent years in some of the new introductions of this delicately beautiful flower. Our stock of Perry's, Bliss, Cayeux, Vilmorin, Maron and other foreign novelties ls limited, as we can only dispose of the increase under import regulations, and of the more expensive varieties only one or two rhizomes can be spared this season, so late customers may be disappointed in securing them. Most of the stock of our rare varieties, both American and foreign, was secured direct from the introducers. Orders will be taken in the spring, but no deliveries of the rare varieties will be made until after blooming season is over. If our supply of any variety for sale is ex hansted when your order is received, you will be promptly advised and your money returned, not be kept waiting, as we have in many cases, two or three months, and then disappointed in' getting the desired plants.
