"This beautifully illustrated catalogue explores how Georg Jensen silver has expanded the boundaries of modern style, changing the look of twentieth-century homes and spreading Scandinavian design around the world. Design for Everyday Living is the first scholarly treatment of Georg Jensen to approach the firm's output in an analytical way, situating it in the context of twentieth-century design history and focusing on the firm's unique evolution and global influence. This book is geared to a wide audience of interested nonspecialists and design historians rather than to a narrower readership of silver collectors. It is also innovative in that it focuses on the story of the firm rather than solely on the career of its founder. The essays are all original and include a contribution from Thomas Thulstrup, the leading expert on Georg Jensen silver. The book also benefits from a close collaboration with the Jensen firm, which has allowed us access to images and archival materials published here for the first time"--

"A master artist and teacher of metalwork presents a bold new approach to creative expression in metal. Believing that the time has come for the artist to free himself from the functional forms that have dominated the metalsmith's craft -- the cup, the box, the pitcher, etc. -- Heikki Seppä urges the craftsman to create in terms of pure form, and in this book he shows him how...The book is profusely illustrated throughout with the author's own sketches of the ideas and techniques discussed. It will be of significant value to the accomplished craftsman as well as to teachers and advanced students of this exciting and growing art form." --P. [4] of cover.

Few detailed studies have appeared on the historical context of contemporary handicrafts in Indonesia since the publication of the standard work in five volumes by J. E. Jasper and Mas Pirngadie at the beginning of the twentieth century. One of these handicrafts is Yogya silver, a type of silverware that was developed in Yogyakarta (Yogya) and Kotagede, a small town southeast of this provincial capital. Yogya silver has been made for centuries, but thanks to the efforts of Dutch and Javanese promoters of decorative crafts, Yogya silver craft underwent a profound transformation in the early twentieth century. This catalog focuses on the styles and decoration of Yogya silver in this period and describes its history. Some of the most important works from famous collections are showcased, a list of silversmiths??? initials is included, and some of the works have been dated. Many people are familiar with this type of silver work--though they may not know it to be named Yogya Silver--because this is what many of them bring home as a souvenir from Indonesia. This recent popularity, in fact a revival, has brought Yogya silver new fame. It has become collectable and older pieces are sought after. With this renewed interest came many questions: who are the makers, is there meaning in the designs, just how old are some of the pieces? This book is the next step in an ongoing effort to answer these and many more questions surrounding Yogya silver.
