This monograph gives an overview of various classes of infinite-dimensional Lie groups and their applications in Hamiltonian mechanics, fluid dynamics, integrable systems, gauge theory, and complex geometry. The text includes many exercises and open questions.

This volume consists of ten articles which provide an in-depth and reader-friendly survey of some of the foundational aspects of singularity theory. Authored by world experts, the various contributions deal with both classical material and modern developments, covering a wide range of topics which are linked to each other in fundamental ways. Singularities are ubiquitous in mathematics and science in general. Singularity theory interacts energetically with the rest of mathematics, acting as a crucible where different types of mathematical problems interact, surprising connections are born and simple questions lead to ideas which resonate in other parts of the subject. This is the first volume in a series which aims to provide an accessible account of the state-of-the-art of the subject, its frontiers, and its interactions with other areas of research. The book is addressed to graduate students and newcomers to the theory, as well as to specialists who can use it as a guidebook.

This book provides a comprehensive advanced multi-linear algebra course based on the concept of Hasse-Schmidt derivations on a Grassmann algebra (an analogue of the Taylor expansion for real-valued functions), and shows how this notion provides a natural framework for many ostensibly unrelated subjects: traces of an endomorphism and the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, generic linear ODEs and their Wronskians, the exponential of a matrix with indeterminate entries (Putzer's method revisited), universal decomposition of a polynomial in the product of two monic polynomials of fixed smaller degree, Schubert calculus for Grassmannian varieties, and vertex operators obtained with the help of Schubert calculus tools (Giambelli's formula). Significant emphasis is placed on the characterization of decomposable tensors of an exterior power of a free abelian group of possibly infinite rank, which then leads to the celebrated Hirota bilinear form of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy describing the Plücker embedding of an infinite-dimensional Grassmannian. By gathering ostensibly disparate issues together under a unified perspective, the book reveals how even the most advanced topics can be discovered at the elementary level.

This volume contains invited lectures and selected research papers in the fields of classical and modern differential geometry, global analysis, and geometric methods in physics, presented at the 10th International Conference on Differential Geometry and its Applications (DGA2007), held in Olomouc, Czech Republic. The book covers recent developments and the latest results in the following fields: Riemannian geometry, connections, jets, differential invariants, the calculus of variations on manifolds, differential equations, Finsler structures, and geometric methods in physics. It is also a celebration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest mathematicians, Leonhard Euler, and includes the Euler lecture OC Leonhard Euler OCo 300 years onOCO by R Wilson. Notable contributors include J F Cariena, M Castrilln Lpez, J Erichhorn, J-H Eschenburg, I KoliO, A P Kopylov, J Korbai, O Kowalski, B Kruglikov, D Krupka, O Krupkovi, R L(r)andre, Haizhong Li, S Maeda, M A Malakhaltsev, O I Mokhov, J Muoz Masqu(r), S Preston, V Rovenski, D J Saunders, M Sekizawa, J Slovik, J Szilasi, L Tamissy, P Walczak, and others."

A systematic geometro-topological approach to vanishing cycles appearing in non-proper fibrations is proposed in this tract. Lefschetz theory, complex Morse theory and singularities of hypersurfaces are presented in detail leading to the latest research on topics such as the topology of singularities of meromorphic functions and non-generic Lefschetz pencils.
