The resurvey of the Harrogate district carried out between 1973 and 1978 was intended primarily to assess its economic mineral wealth, notably sand and gravel. It also yielded information on the Permian limestone resources, which are a valuable source of aggregate for the construction industry, and produced important scientific information, such as the marked thickness changes in the Carboniferous sequence along the margin between the Askrigg Block and the Craven Basin. A modern account of the Quaternary glaciation of the area is also included and potential sources of geological hazard are identified.
