Excerpt from Geographical and Statistical History of Steele County: From Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time; Embracing Leading Incidents of Pioneer Life, Names of Early Settlers, Nature of Soil, Advantages to Settlers, &C., &C An entirely correct history of any country or of any train of events, would be "something new under the sun," as the memory of men differ according to the different stand points from which they view the events as they occur. And we have not the vanity to suppose that the following sketch of Steele county will be that rare thing in literature - a perfect history. Yet we have endeavored to gather from the mass of events that cluster around the first settlement such items as would be of interest, to treasure up for future reference. We have taken great pains to glean all the important incidents of pioneer life within the boundaries of the county, and to chronicle them in such manner as may be most useful and entertaining for the future enquirers after the first things of this new country. Yet we cannot but apprehend that there are many matters of interest that we have failed to produce, as we have been unable to see all the early settlers in person, and consequently many items may have been left ungathered. The events we have here chronicled may seem of little or no importance to the present actors, but having been rescued from the deep pool of forgetfulness, we believe that in future years they will not be looked upon as wholly insignificant. We have endeavored to give a truthful representation of the present and prospective conditions of the country, and to faithfully record such incidents of pioneer civilization as we have been able to gather from the actors themselves. Excerpt from History of Edgefield County From the Earliest Settlement From his boyhood the author was a great reader and student Of history. Nothing pleased him better than to get hold of some good book telling of the deeds Of other times, and stories Of Marion and his men, and others of that heroic age. Unfor tunately, books that told the history of that period were too few; but he had Weems' Life of W ashington and Of Marion, and a book Of American Biographies published in 1830, all of which were well suited to cultivate a taste for history and make the reader long for more.
