Methods in Geochemistry and Geophysics 11: Geochemical Facies Analysis summarizes research regarding geochemical analysis of sedimentary facies. It demonstrates the extent to which geochemical criteria can be used to interpret sedimentary facies and considers the physicochemical criteria that affect the sediments deposited, including salinity, temperature, and redox potential. It also examines element or isotope variations in sedimentary rocks that are associated with variations in the depositional environment. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins by defining the facies. It also presents the prerequisites of geochemical facies analysis. This includes the permanence of the composition of the oceans through long periods of the Earth's history, along with climatic, tectonic, and biological influences. The book then discusses methodological prerequisites for the determination of geochemical facies. It provides the results of geochemical facies analyses, including those for hydrofacies, lithofacies, and biofacies. In addition, it explains the non-chemical methods of facies analysis. The book concludes by looking at practical applications and future importance of geochemical facies analysis. This is an invaluable source book for students, geochemists, and geophysicists.

This book celebrates the professional career of Harold Reading, who has played a leading role in the development of the IAS, and has been at the roots of the development of 'facies sedimentology' as an art in itself and as a major tool in the broader field of geology. This special collection of original research papers from Harold Reading's students covers the wide range of his research interests and reflects the power of facies sedimentology today. State-of-the-art research papers in the important field of facies sedimentology * a festschrift to one of the great names in sedimentology.

Sequence stratigraphy is an important concept that provides mechanisms to help explain the origin of carbonate rocks and evolution of reservoir seal facies therein. Incorporating geochemical data to help build the sequence stratigraphic framework gives a more robust and evolved sequence stratigraphic interpretation. This study illustrates that sea level fluctuation can be interpreted by looking at the detrital input within the studied section of Mississippian limestone. The detrital input into the system is determined by the use of proxies for detrital sediment. These geochemical proxies are Al, Zr, Ti, Th, and K. The abundances of these elements were found to fluctuate with the falling and rising stages of sea level. This was determined by establishing a hierarchical based sequence stratigraphic framework by looking at carbonate facies and facies stacking patterns along with the geochemical signatures of the detrital elements.
