The author of this book made an attempt to create the general theory of optimization of linear systems (both distributed and lumped) with a singular control. The book touches upon a wide range of issues such as solvability of boundary values problems for partial differential equations with generalized right-hand sides, the existence of optimal controls, the necessary conditions of optimality, the controllability of systems, numerical methods of approximation of generalized solutions of initial boundary value problems with generalized data, and numerical methods for approximation of optimal controls. In particular, the problems of optimization of linear systems with lumped controls (pulse, point, pointwise, mobile and so on) are investigated in detail.

At present, in order to resolve problems of ecology and to save mineral resources for future population generations, it is quite necessary to know how to maintain nature arrangement in an efficient way. It is possible to achieve a rational nature arrangement when analyzing solutions to problems concerned with optimal control of distributed systems and with optimization of modes in which main ground medium processes are functioning (motion of liquids, generation of temperature fields, mechanical deformation of multicomponent media). Such analysis becomes even more difficult because of heterogeneity of the region that is closest to the Earth surface, and thin inclusions/cracks in it exert their essential influence onto a state and development of the mentioned processes, especially in the cases of mining. Many researchers, for instance, A.N. Tikhonov - A.A. Samarsky [121], L. Luckner - W.M. Shestakow [65], Tien-Mo Shih, K.L. Johnson [47], E. Sanchez-Palencia [94] and others stress that it is necessary to consider how thin inclusions/cracks exert their influences onto development of these processes, while such inclusions differ in characteristics from main media to a considerable extent (moisture permeability, permeability to heat, bulk density or shear strength may be mentioned). Xll An influence exerted from thin interlayers onto examined processes is taken into account sufficiently adequately by means of various constraints, namely, by the conjugation conditions [4, 8, 10, 15, 17-20, 22-26, 38, 44, 47, 52, 53, 68, 76, 77, 81, 83, 84, 90, 95, 96-100, 112-114, 117, 123].

Abstract models for many problems in science and engineering take the form of an operator equation. The resolution of these problems often requires determining the existence and uniqueness of solutions to these equations. "Generalized Solutions of Operator Equations and Extreme Elements" presents recently obtained results in the study of the generalized solutions of operator equations and extreme elements in linear topological spaces. The presented results offer new methods of identifying these solutions and studying their properties. These new methods involve the application of a priori estimations and a general topological approach to construct generalized solutions of linear and nonlinear operator equations. The monograph is intended for mathematicians, graduate students and researchers studying functional analysis, operator theory, and the theory of optimal control.

Control of Distributed Parameter Systems 1982 covers the proceeding of the Third International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Symposium on Control of Distributed Parameter Systems. The book reviews papers that tackle issues concerning the control of distributed parameter systems, such as modeling, identification, estimation, stabilization, optimization, and energy system. The topics that the book tackles include notes on optimal and estimation result of nonlinear systems; approximation of the parameter identification problem in distributed parameters systems; and optimal control of a punctually located heat source. This text also encompasses the stabilization of nonlinear parabolic equations and the decoupling approach to the control of large spaceborne antenna systems. Stability of Hilbert space contraction semigroups and the tracking problem in the fractional representation approach are also discussed. This book will be of great interest to researchers and professionals whose work concerns automated control systems.

Stochastic control, the control of random processes, has become increasingly more important to the systems analyst and engineer. The Second IFAC Symposium on Stochastic Control represents current thinking on all aspects of stochastic control, both theoretical and practical, and as such represents a further advance in the understanding of such systems.

The report is a survey of theoretical and computational methods in the field of optimal control of distributed parameter systems. This includes systems described by integral equations and partial differential equations. The various studies which have been done are grouped according to the method employed. A number of applications and potential applications of these methods are discussed, and certain deficiencies in the current state of knowledge are noted. Difficulties and opportunities in practical applications are discussed, and suggestions are offered for directions of research to render the results more readily usable. A list of references is included numbering more than 250 items: papers, report, and books.
