The family name of Retteau has its origin in Northern France. William Retteau (Ritteau) was a French Huguenot of the sixtieth centenary. A hundred years of turmoil in France over religious causes caused the Huguenots to flee into England, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, Wales and Spain. William was born in 1658. In 1685, he arrived in America and settled in Pennsylvania. William married Mary in 1698 and had four children. William died in 1730.
