He was the son of Francis McConnell and Sarah Shields. Elizabeth was born 21 February 1812 in Loretto, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Englebert Walters and Susan Behe. Hugh McConnell married Elizabeth Walters 28 April 1835 in Pennsylvania. They lived in Cambria Co., Pennsylvania and were the parents of eight children. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, California and elsewhere.

By the early 1800s members of the family had immigrated to America. James McConnell (b. 1757) was born in Dromore, Ireland and married Margaret Topping. They were the parents of seven children. Their children immigrated to America where they settled in Ohio, West Virginia and other parts of the United States where they married into a number of families including Bell, Christy, Freshwater, Manypenny and Croye.
