Excerpt from A Genealogical Record of Thomas Bascom and His Descendants To preserve to the scattered individuals of the race some memorial of their progenitors, this account of the emigrant Bascom and his descendants has been prepared. In the summer of 1862, while passing a few days in the little town of Orleans on the outer shore of Cape Cod, I was shown the last resting place of one of the early ministers - the revered Jonathan Bascom. With a minuteness as laudable as, unfortunately, it is infrequent, the engraver had placed upon the tombstone the name of the dead man's birth-place, an obscure town in central Connecticut. A year later, a visit to that place afforded opportunity for a careful inspection of the town and church records. From the facts there gathered, augmented by others furnished me by the few individuals of the name whom I chanced to know, the nucleus was formed for the genealogy contained in the following pages. Encouraged by the hearty assistance extended to me on all sides, I was tempted to extend the limits of the proposed sketch and include all of the male branches of the family, so far as they could be reached. The genealogist, in the prosecution of his work, meets with peculiar difficulties. He must contend with an indifference amounting in many cases to total neglect; with the carelessness of his correspondents, and with conflicting statements, traditions and records. Out of the mass of material finally accumulated he must arrange, select and collate; discard what is improper or unfit for publication; and at the last produce a result which shall be intelligible, and, above all, reliable. Entire accuracy in a work of this kind is impossible. Despite all care it is to be feared that mistakes will be detected in the following pages. Excerpt from Howard Genealogy: A Genealogical Record; Embracing All the Known Descendants in This Country, of Thomas and Susanna Howard, Who Have Borne the Family Name or Have Married Into the Family "And be said, Behold your grave-posts Have no mark, no sign, nor symbol. Go, paint them all with figures, Each one with his household symbol, With its own ancestral totem, So that those who follow after May distinguish them and know them." It seems proper to remark in the first place, negatively, that in commencing the compilation of the following Genealogical Record the writer had no expectation of being able to trace the family back in the mother country to some titled or wealthy ancestor, consequently he has made no effort to retrace the family beyond the first settler in this country. Nor has he ever hoped, by such retrogressive inquiry, to reach in a direct line of descent any one of those vast estates which many think are stored away in foreign treasuries awaiting legitimate claimants. He has little faith that such treasures anywhere exist. Neither, as it has been intimated to him, did he commence the work nor has he prosecuted it to gratify any personal or family pride in recording the names and history of kindred who at any time have made themselves conspicuous in some department of public life. It was assumed at the outset that few, if any, such would appear. Nor, again, was he influenced by any considerations of pecuniary profit that might accrue. If that had been his motive, he would have been greatly disappointed, for, if the expenses incurred were summed up, and a reasonable per diem compensation allowed for the time spent in gathering materials for the work and putting them in order, the cost per volume would exceed many fold the price the writer has purposed to put upon the work.
